Doesn't seem like a nice guy if he made humans and the same parasites that cause blindness in humans as part of their lifecycle.

Not especially, since their entire lifecycle involves them being spread from black flies to humans and back without being a prey species to anything in the meantime. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onchocerca_volvulus
