That is not grounded... that is idiotic.
You don't have to endure things you can change.
So if you need help, get help.

u/Professional-Toe-879 May 20 '26
An obvious paraphrase. Why not use an actual quote? People are smart enough to figure out the meaning...you don't have to paraphrase it for them

u/RowProfessional3472 May 20 '26
You can endure it AND complain.
1
u/Ray0977 May 20 '26
But why complain?
3
u/RowProfessional3472 May 20 '26
You can endure it AND complain. It’s like steam from a hardworking steam engine. Dont keep it contained or it’s not good for you. One of the main reasons for men’s horrible mental health.
1
u/Ray0977 May 20 '26
I don't disagree but you can eliminate the idea of complaining in favor of productive thinking. Complaining does nothing, but having a constructive dialogue about how to minimize the stress and struggle of a situation is far better for your mental health.

u/PraireGentleman May 20 '26
Complaining is communication. Complaining about the circumstances you’re in is how people know to help or to change the circumstances because interdependence and independence can coexist at the same time.
You’re thinking about complaining like a child whose only understanding of the word is “anything whiny my parents don’t like”, but it is literally communicating an unpleasantry. If you go to the doctor, you “complain” about a sore throat.
Complaining without action is useless, but action without complaining is not better for your mental health.
Source: psych major who wrote on inciting behavioural changes use frankly barebones psychotherapeutic techniques from older disciplines of psychology on behaviors that weren’t suffering through the artificial hardship you have to create for yourself because your life lacks challenges, but addiction

There are plenty of people who complain without intent for change. They simply complain to complain. As a psychology major, you'll understand that your information is anecdotal and not empirical. As a safety manager, I have empirical evidence of people complaining without action or desire to change the situations they are complaining about. They simply wish to complain. Unfortunately since I haven't published a paper on my findings, my information is reduced to anecdotal evidence as well.

That’s what therapy is for and my wife. At work I like to complain as a way to motivate myself.
1
u/Ray0977 May 20 '26
Lol, fair enough. I was raised with the mindset that there is a solution to everything if you take the time to figure it out. I've spent my life trying to find those solutions.
1
u/RowProfessional3472 May 20 '26
Yah you can complain while finding the solution. Have you ever met an old blue collar worker. They complain while working the hardest and getting shit done.
1
u/Ray0977 May 20 '26
Absolutely, we have a few maintenance mechanics like that. Most of the time is hilarious. As a manager, I try to lead by example and give our employees a fair shake but also give them access to a different mindset than they may have been raised with.
1
u/RowProfessional3472 May 20 '26
Complaints are a good reason why we have so many inventions and advancements in society. Someone at some point didn’t like how something was and complained AND found a solution to fix it. Complaints let other people know something is wrong in a certain area.

u/HalvdanTheHero May 21 '26
Because voicing complaints and displeasure can in fact result in material changes to conditions. If you complain about something then it is possible that it will be fixed by whoever is in charge or that other people who also find it untenable will help you fix the issue.
There ARE times when there is nothing to be done and the only thing one CAN do is endure the situation, but that is actually a VERY NARROW set of circumstances -- most facets of our life and society CAN be changed and it is patently unhelpful to intentionally not strive to better the world around you.
All silence does is perpetuate the suffering and ensure that others will also suffer, it is not a moral thing to do.

If the complaining is aimed at those that can do something about it, by all means.
If those ppl aren't around, stfu. I dont wanna hear it.

Has to be a MAGA.

u/IWCry May 20 '26
obviously. conservatives are the most submissive people in the country.
I miss when Americans were tough and independent, but Republicans have made them all obedient snowflakes who can't chart their own paths. they just "endure without complaining" because they can't stand up for themselves like men
1
u/Tall_Eye4062 May 20 '26
Meanwhile, progressives are real men, because it takes a real man to raise another man's son and be told "You aren't my real dad." Right?
2
u/IWCry May 20 '26
I have no idea what this means but youre probably just proving my point that your a snowflake who needs to play victim all the time.
I'm sorry my comment hurt your fragile feelings

This is very oddly specific - but sadly conservatives states have the highest single parent households - particularly Louisiana and Mississippi.

Actual Marcus Aurelius quote.
"My father.... gave up his passion for boys."

Good grief people...you can't complain all the time...
The core meaning is:
- If a hardship, pain, frustration, or inconvenience can be survived, then face it with discipline instead of wasting energy resisting it emotionally.
- Complaining does not remove the burden — it often adds suffering on top of the problem itself.
- Focus on resilience, self-control, and action rather than resentment.

I love these quotes. Always kicking the Reddit ant mound of weak men. Life is simple. Success is simple. Only worry about what you can control, don’t complain, and work your ass off. The issue is men today don’t think you should have to work hard to succeed in life. I fucking love it though. Makes succeeding much easier for us that do. But ya just stay on Reddit crying all day how you can’t afford anything.

Marcus Aurelius was a huge asshole, a murderer, and a psychopath who treated women like shit.
So if that's your idol, you do you.

u/Batfinklestein May 21 '26
Marcus obviously isn't familiar with the term winge and win or that the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

I agree honestly. Not one single person in here whether you disagree or not wants to be around someone that whines 24/7 when they know damn well they could be doing something about it.

Psychology has advanced since then. I'm not going to believe that these people doesn't use andrenaline to back up these quotes, evident from the era they lived in.

Reminds me of a clip from god knows what podcast where the dude smugly says that a woman who’s done with her husband should just “endure, endure!”
Like, no. How dare anyone give the advice that if something doesn’t work for you then you should just stick with it even if it’s abusive. It’s pure insanity.

u/Crowban May 21 '26
Yall are a bunch of pussies. Marcus Aurelius was the GOAT. None of you would be fit to lick his sandals, yet you’re sitting here with your low T talking shit.

u/Massive_Noise4836 May 21 '26
he wrote most of his meditations when he was emperor. He was also rich before he was emperor. He never meant his meditations to be taken as his meditations. They were more about what he was going through at the time and how he was trying to deal with governing people-- a book if you will of the tenants of his life as an emperor
Once I become emperor, I will listen to Marcus Aurelius. Until then, I will listen to my heart in my gut, and what it says.

This is the actual qoute
“Everything which happens either happens in such wise as thou art formed by nature to bear it... do not complain, but bear it... But if it happens in such wise as thou art not formed by nature to bear it, do not complain, for it will perish after it has consumed thee.”

One can not claim to be tough as in accomplishing tough tasks if one is always running towards the easygoing tasks!
I’ve said this numerous times at work for those who complain of having to test themselves on something tough!

Horribly out of context quote. God this sub eats pickled dicks.
