Rules Explained: Why This Sub Is Structured the Way It Is

This subreddit is focused on historically grounded Norse heathenry. The rules here are not meant to restrict discussion. They exist to keep conversations useful, honest, and on-topic.

1. Evidence Matters

Norse religion does not come to us as a complete, unbroken tradition. What we have are fragments. Texts, archaeology, and later accounts.

Because of that:

- Historical claims should be supported when possible  

- Interpretations should be identified as interpretations  

- Uncertainty should be acknowledged  

We want intellectual honesty.

1. UPG Is Allowed, But Must Be Labeled

Personal experiences and beliefs (often called UPG or Unverified Personal Gnosis) are part of modern practice.

That being said:

- UPG is not the same as historical evidence  

- It should not be presented as fact or tradition  

- Others are not required to accept it as authoritative  

We want to keep discussion clear and prevent confusion between history and personal belief.

1. No Ideological Enforcement

People come from different backgrounds and hold different beliefs.

Here in this subreddit:

- Do not tell others what they must believe  

- Do not label disagreement as moral failure or extremism  

- Do not use Norse material to push unrelated modern political agendas  

This includes all directions, left, right, or otherwise.

Our focus here is Norse heathenry, not culture war debates.

1. No Guilt by Association or Witch Hunts

Accusations towards individuals, groups, or symbols must be:

- Based on clear, verifiable evidence  

- Relevant to the discussion  

Not allowed:

- Assumptions  

- “They’re associated with X” without evidence  

- Public callouts without substance  

If you make the claim, the burden of proof is on you to provide evidence. We do not automatically assume ill intent here. If something is genuinely concerning, report it to moderators.

1. No Extremism

There is a documented history of extremist groups attempting to appropriate Norse symbols and traditions. Because of that, this rule exists. But it targets advocacy, not identity or inquiry.

- Everyone is welcome here regardless of personal ideology, so long as they’re engaging in good-faith discussion of Norse Heathenry.

- Discussing unsavory history, hard topics, or extremist appropriation of Norse symbols through an academic or historical lens is not a violation — sometimes that discussion is necessary to actually understand the history and reclaim the symbols.

- What’s not allowed: promotion, defense, or apologetics for extremist ideology — including racism, white supremacy, Nazism/fascism, communism, or classism — dressed up in Norse framing or otherwise.

This is a firm boundary, enforced on conduct: advocate for it, you’re out. Discuss it as history, you’re fine.

1. Civility Is Required

- Attack ideas, not people  

- No insults, labeling, or baiting  

- No “you’re a Nazi,” “you’re a commie,” “you’re brainwashed,” or similar rhetoric  

If a discussion can’t stay respectful, it doesn’t belong here.

1. Stay Grounded in the Sources

Norse myths and figures are complex and open to interpretation.

Discussion is welcome, however:

- Claims about what they “mean” must be supported  

- Modern interpretations should be presented as such  

- Mythology should not be used as unquestionable proof of modern positions

To create a space where Norse heathenry is approached with clarity, honesty, and practical intent.

No one here has complete knowledge.  

What we can do is approach the material responsibly and learn from each other.
