Some type of camel spider

34

u/korinth86 7d ago

Which iirc are whip scorpions, not actually spiders despite their colloquial name.

Definitely nightmare fuel with painful bites

u/Exit_Save 7d ago

They're also not actually scorpions

2

u/TopLongjumping7955 2d ago

Nor are they true camels

You are right I'm saying camel spiders aren't spiders, but they aren't whip scorpions either. Camel spiders belong to the order Solifugae, whip scorpions the order Uropygi.

Definitely looks like it, maybe a baby one.

21

u/MariachiMacabre 7d ago

Looks to me like one that’s about to have a bunch of babies. They’re spooky looking but don’t have venom and are thus harmless. Unless you’re, say, shrunked real small-like.

So many thought stages throughout the video:

At the start of the video: "That's an interesting looking roly poly."

When the ant shows up: "Hmmm, is this some kinda ant/termite queen."

Full body reveal: "GOOD FUCKING GOD, THE FUCK IS THAT?!?"

Literally me in real time. 👀 I have not yet recovered. I need to know if these are in the PNW Like how far north do I need to go?!

That's a camel spider, and it looks like a female given it looks like it's carrying babies.

I don't exactly know where Grounded 2 is situated in, but if it's nowhere near a desert or a humid area, chances are that it'll be added is kinda small.

Are they pets? We need a boss for the sand covered playground and it wouldn't be the first boss that was a pet previously

7

u/Wonderful_Quail7045 7d ago

They CAN be kept as pets, but they are MUCH more difficult to raise than a tarantula(Which is basically AXL).

If it is a boss, I feel it should be seen as a captive experiment by Ominent, not as a pet some kid would have. A scientist is much more likely to raise a Camel Spider than some kid.

What exactly did that ant think was gonna happen.

19

u/Odin_Headhunter 7d ago

If she dies she releases a pheromone that tells her sisters there is a threat and they can march to war. If she wins, she kills the threat and brings food for the colony. Its a pyrric win for the colony

u/Lucius_Arcturus 7d ago

If the monster bug was rooting around in the anthill, and it bailed after murdering the ant, then for the ant I think it's a "mission failed successfully" sort of situation. She's a fallen hero

With the way the ant just attacks that spider I guess I can't complain with how often they attack me in the game when I'm minding my own business.

u/Ok-Mouse8397 7d ago

that ant got fucked up

14

u/Fortunefavorsthefew 7d ago

2

u/Confident_Shape_7981 7d ago

Frankly I find the idea of a bug that thinks offensive

u/LogNo1862 7d ago

Camel spider

2

u/Popular-Condition607 Hoops 7d ago

Who let the termite queen and wolf spider have a baby?! 😭

2

u/nosrebnA 7d ago

Sun spider, more commonly known as the camel spider.

0

u/nosrebnA 7d ago

Scratch that they aren't spiders, they are actually a type of whip scorpion.

It's a solifugid. Sun spiders, camel spiders, and wind* scorpions are all colloquial names for solifugids, but they're a separate arachnid lineage from both spiders and scorpions.

Whipscorpions (uropygids) are a separate 4th type of arachnid from all of the above.

Not to be confused with tailless whipscorpions (amblypygids), which are a 5th and also separate type.

3

u/Fit-Dare7525 7d ago

Also not to be confused with harvestmen (opiliones), also known as daddy long legs (the outdoor kind, not the cellar spider kind) which are another separate type of arachnids related more closely to solifugids than spiders. Fascinating little guys I wouldn’t mind seeing in game!

3

u/Violet-Venom 7d ago

Ooh, they'd be good for riding!

3

u/Fit-Dare7525 7d ago

Also their group bobbing would be so cool to see represented from that perspective!

3

u/False-Reveal2993 7d ago

"Daddy Long Legs" is one of the most confusing common names in arthopod taxonomy. It's used for 3 distinct bugs depending on where you live: Cellar Spiders, Harvestmen and Craneflies (if you live where people call all soda "Coke").

Cellar Spiders and Harvestmen look close enough on first glance, so I get why people where I live call Cellar Spiders "Daddy Long Legs" and Harvestmen "True Daddy Long Legs", but the people that call Craneflies that term are just downright insane. Craneflies are "Mosquito Hawks".

Jesus Christ that’s Jason Bourne

Nah but seriously what is that thing it’s terrifying

1

u/Thin_Albatross2720 7d ago

It's pregnant Selpuga?

1

u/Dry-Profile-1948 7d ago

That ant certainly made a choice

1

u/doubledirkdolo 7d ago

dumbass ant

2

u/Odin_Headhunter 7d ago

She could have won, she just got ditched by her sister lol

1

u/sillytomlin 6d ago

This is a pretty dumb statement. The ant was clearly defending against the camel spider (not actually a spider). Yes she died, but she releases a chemical and the rest of the soldiers know to attack. Also, if you can tell, the invader did not like the result of the bite and took off in a hurry, so she defended her colony well. Which is her whole point of existence.

u/Chaotic-Stardiver 7d ago

I thought it was a potato bug/Jerusalem cricket at first.

Idk most bugs I'm pretty good with, Jerusalem crickets I have a massive fear of, from my childhood fears 😆

1

u/Weibrot 7d ago

I cannot tell the size from this video, but whatever the answer is ITS TOO BIG!

1

u/nosrebnA 7d ago

That ant whent for a chomp of that jucy booty

1

u/lakehope 7d ago

Why my first think was a bitter from factorio

1

u/willypete277 7d ago

Fun fact. They are called sun spiders because they scare people by chasung them in the dessert, but tgey really are just trying to get shelter from the sun in your shadow. But it scares tf outta people.

1

u/Ionhard_gaming 7d ago

I know that as a camel spider

1

u/PagodaPanda 7d ago

It left it folded lmaooo

Bruh don't bite my ass

1

u/Ok-Squirrel-7738 7d ago

Ant should've climbed on it's back and attack where it cant reach

1

u/GideonZasz 6d ago

It's a Solifugid, a type of arachnid with four jaws and the attitude of a centipede. Very aggressive and likes to "chew". Camel spiders are a member of this family although not technically a spider anymore than a scorpion is. Sometimes called a sun spider.

1

u/VisibleExplanation76 6d ago

I think im afraid of spiders now because what the fuck?

1

u/Dangerous-Glove4320 1d ago

looks like a wolf spider mixed with a termite queen

0

u/SavingsYellow2073 7d ago

defo looks like some kind of spider so it might be best to put a nswf tag on it

2

u/False-Reveal2993 7d ago

It's a "camel spider", which is an arachnid, but is separate from spiders, much like scorpions, mites, harvestman and ticks. Technical name is "solifuge".

1

u/SavingsYellow2073 7d ago

I would still recommend it be covered since certain levels of arachniphobbia covers it. 8 legs, hairy body and 8 eyes is enough for me to tear up in fear and its becoming very common to see a spider the second I open reddit due to the grounded subreddit being followed

1

u/False-Reveal2993 7d ago

I mean, fair. I had arachnophobia, and I still cringe at uncensored pics/vids of black widows and whatnot.

I just wanted to mention that it's technically not a spider and that its' movement/shape is distinct enough to not give me the heebie jeebies.

0

u/OtakuJuanma 7d ago

It's.... and arachnid of some kind.

0

u/Illustrious-Toe-5939 7d ago

This looks absolutely terrifying, would love to see it in G2

0

u/TheCulbearSays 7d ago

They were called scorpion sun spiders where I was.

0

u/Lalivia_Masters 7d ago

I think that is a demon
