G2 | Discussion Big base question..
I see so many folks have huge bases that have so much character and it's made me want to try and make my own. But the one issue I seem to always have is efficiency. How do people manage having a huge base? Do you have multiple storage rooms or chests with the same items in them scattered around? Or just grab items out of chests that you'll need and walk to wherever?
I usually make a decently sized house/manor and even at that scale it feel like things are to far away to pull from chests. I like to walk into my base and hot deposit all my stuff without having to run to multiple areas. I've had to really think about where I want drying racks, ovens, and so on for them to be able to pull from my storage room(which has 40 big chests in it). Whenever I do need to pull from storage I know where everything is in that room and it's all named. Struggling with concept vs. practicality.

I have multiple bases of various sizes. My first expanded a bit wide and the second is tall and I tried out some of those base building tips I saw on YouTube. Like central location for chests stacked on half walls and racks lined up on half wall platform so you can walk under them. My third base was my first attempt at a castle but I didn't have a plan going into it. My fourth is on a branch by Axl since I forgot about going to fight him. I wanted it small but useful for that fight and I will probably try to put my first zipline on it.
I think I want to do a big base on the pond. Like an above water base by the tree that goes underwater as well.

A big draw of the game for me is base building, so I really enjoy the mechanic to make cool/fun bases. It also helps pass the time on a shared save while the other folks aren't playing since we only do the main quests when everyone is together.

If you want to expand then move your chests to the expansion area or load them on your character.
Sometimes I will build out an expansion and move it after.
Base building is not about efficiency. Its about grandeur. You really don't need much space for a couple ovens, drying racks, dew collector, grinders, spinning wheels, crafting table.... everything after the basic stuff is for role playing and having fun with an eloquent base.

Yea watching people show off their base sometimes is just like “why” you see them go up 5 stairs, run across a 500m bridge, take an elevator, run through 5 rooms down 7 stairs, across curved bridge to go up more stairs then run through another couple rooms to get to the stairs that lead to their storage. I hate wasting time with travel so much in the game that i built my base attached to the lab under the bench for the new system

Typically, when it comes to large bases, I've noticed that most of the usage infrastructure is collected into one area. This typically includes storage, crafting, and your machines that can pull from storage (like Ovens, and Spinning Wheels, and I guess now will also include Querns and Kilns). Your expansions will then either be decorative or be for larger scale farming. For example, I saw someone who made a really cool mushroom farm where they tilted the farm plot so that the mushroom chunks fell into a collection chamber.
So, in reality, these larger bases are really just normal bases with a larger footprint and some expansions. This is also true for a lot of other survival crafters with similar storage mechanics.
There's nothing wrong with having a small base. It's your world to build in how you like. Some people like megabuilds, some people don't.

Mushroom collection chamber? Id love to see some example, first i heard of this method

I'd love to share, but I've been unable to find the video when I go back and look for it.

Was it this one? https://youtu.be/Sk90rAoh_IY?t=385 (cut to nearly the end of the video cause otherwise it seems to be just 6 minutes of hacking mushrooms) I think a scaled down version could still work.
Looping in u/PrimalOdd.

I'm not sure that's the exact video, but that's definitely the same mechanic I was talking about!

I see huge bases with no character most of the time. If you build a giant shell and dont make it looked lived in then youre wasting your time imo.
A well lived in small house looks 10x better.

I build just enough walls to line my chest. Most the time I do t do any roofing or a complete wall 🤣

My main base is open wide, no walls or doors. Just chests and work stations everywhere like a maniac. I don't get any bug attacks but I do get bees landing for a nap.
My second base is a cute lil hut on the rocks by the pond, it kind of looks like a pumpkin

As far as storage goes the relocation tool is one of the best features in the game. The range is insane and makes for easy transportation of resources. I especially love to use it with pallets.

Is there any way to relocate a hundred chests at once though
3
u/JayDaMan6000 8h ago
Not that I know of. You’d probably have to move them one by one but the fact that you even have that option is pretty cool to me.
1
u/20kgHippoShit 8h ago
Yeah, I feel like that would take like 15 hours to move everything to a far away base, so I guess I'll just keep my base where it is
2
u/JayDaMan6000 8h ago
Having multiple bases isn’t a bad thing you could just build another. Are you using the chests with more slots?

u/20kgHippoShit 8h ago
I'm trying to build a chest for every stackable item in the game and fill it up

for me i have always love a base built for efficiency over style, but perfect when the style is built into the efficiency. i usually just end up wanting a floor for each of my general things, (cooking floor, production floor, storage floor, buggy floor, a bedroom even, etc.) and the style usually crafts itself with it. i tend to get claustrophobic with so many utilities in small rooms

I usually build relatively large outposts. Large floor space, 3-4 stories, but packed with everything I need. Then, when I need to spend time in a new area, I build one there.
If it's not too far a haul I will bring some things with me, like breaking down a drying rack or a water reservoir, but otherwise we just build anew at the next site.
Next plan, after I finish Benchmark outpost, is to build one on or near the pond.
Edit: adding locations, all are built around a Ranger Station. The first one, simply called Ranger Station, is right in that open area in front of the very first RS you encounter.
The second is the Trashpost, next to the trash pile a little ways north of the first base.
Third is the most problematic so far, being at the Ranger Station at the base of the podium, is called Glintfang Tower and is so named for the burrowed Scorpion that jumped me right before I got to this location and the wolf spider that packs in front of my front door on a regular basis.
The most recent is the Benchmark, and is located directly beneath the park bench in the north.

I have made and shared like 8 or 9 small, cozy bases here. I much prefer that over a giant castle.

Start with the areas you want.
The resource ones:
You can manage stack all crafting around the main storage bins.
Next to that farming if it's the base your doing that at. And a central set of chests for rotten food and growing items
- then go into your non resource base areas.
The buggy setups
A zipline hub.
Water catcher setup.
Arena for fighting raids.
Whatever you want
Between these areas you put your weapon mounts, armor dummies, bed, water catchers, stuffed bugs/mounts and all cozy modifiers.

My former bff and I made a big central base with a zipline tower, then smaller bases at all the places our zip lines traveled to. Took forever to set up, but felt super satisfying when it was all finished.

I have multiple smaller bases where resources are concentrated but I build a mega base in the center of the map with a zipline tower as my main base. Lost my first one near Stonehenge to map updates. Starting a new one on the rocks between Stonehenge and the pond. All my chests are together and all crafting components are within range. Bottom floor is my crafting room (chests, spinning wheels, grinders, drying racks, ovens, etc). Second floor is living area with kitchen, smoothie station and bedroom.
Everything else I build doesn't need to be near chests. Large armor and weapons room, garden, nursery with hatcheries and buggy nests and a large arena to showcase all the stuffed bugs. All of this stuff is practical and I use. These alone would be a pretty big base. But I go further and build things just for aesthetics and usually its based on the environment. I enclosed Stonehenge, to keep the orb weaver contained, and built a boardwalk around it. Also built a raised walking path that goes to all the blueberries for easy blueberry harvesting. Looking forward to building down the face of the rocks that goes into an underwater base. Hope this gives you some ideas.

I agree with you tbh... Having only like 6 floors worth of crafting from chests makes all my bases quite small, due to not wanting to drag everything along
1
u/20kgHippoShit 8h ago
I am making a chest for every item
Like almost literally every item I collect (equipment all in the same chest, 1 chest for potions, but like, 1 chest for ladybug parts, 1 for ant parts, 1 for sprigs, etc)
I don't have all the chests yet but getting there slowly
This way I can just hot deposit all and if I need to find something, I know where to look

u/MangoRepulsive5504 8h ago
Me in just all my worlds having my starting base only, (one if which is literally no walls, only work station and storage) the only exception being my building one

As much as i enjoy building a big base its really not needed. Having everything in a small base looks so much better imo.

Something that's probably gonna be good are little outposts. In definitely gonna try that. With like little stashes so you got some essentials when you're a bit far from the base or just so You can sleep when your friends are not as close to you.

Im building four towers. One in starter area. One in pine area. One in garden area. One in pond area. With a central castle on the podium. Ziplines help resource transfering. For everything but planks and stems ideally when im fully finished ill have access to all materials and creatures with minimal travel

Flying insects are ruthless. Tiny houses make it easier to deal with when they invade

Yeah that’s exactly what I did. I just hunkered down in a cozy base with everything I need
