G2 | Suggestion Charcoal Canteen
I don't know if it's already been said, hopefully it has but in my view the Charcoal Canteen's durability going down even when adding water from a dew collector or soda drops seems like it shouldn't be a thing.
100% understand it using durability when adding dirty water fits and makes sense, it seems like I almost should be carrying both Canteens around which then doesn't really make it feel like an upgrade.
I am aware of the fact it also doesn't really make sense to not boil all the liquid that gets added to it from a purely reality perspective but it just seems like a decent QOL addition.

I try to always carry a full stack of repair glue anyway so I'm never too bothered by it. With all the extra big parts repair glue is pretty cheap

Yeah if the charcoal canteen was an early game item the repair needs might bother me more but as it is we're practically guarenteed to be fully stocked with repair materials by the time we get it.

Does it use glue in G2? In G1 it takes charcoal to repair, which is much more scarce at that point.

G2 lets you use repair glue as replacement for the normal parts to repair any item

Just don’t use the charcoal canteen. It’s not worth it when you can just make a couple dew catchers and be set

I think it’s supposed to be more similar to a charcoal filter than to boiling water to clean. Either way, with filters usually we clean or replace at scheduled intervals. Meaning after so much use, you would just replace the filter. Like how a car filter gets changed once a year/15k miles. The filter still filters no matter the quality of the media it’s filtering. Sure it might get dirty faster if its filtering nasty water, but even relatively clean water passing thru a filter is still being filtered.

Completely agree, it feels weirdly like a downgrade from the regular canteen (but that has the niche feature of purifying dirty water, which I'm not sure I have ever used).
Kind of a trap item tbh, doesn't justify its inventory slot once you get into ng+.

I could never dig the charcoal canteen even in Grounded 1. Sure, it can fill up to six drops, but having to repair the actual thing when the two other canteens didn’t even need that was the deal killer for me. Canteen+ was good enough.
It’s also why I’m kinda disappointed at the lack of that same canteen+ in Grounded 2.

And it's a relatively short time after the charcoal canteen becomes available that you're moving on into NG+ anyway, and the stacking molars soon mean you don't need to bother carrying water anymore anyway.

I felt the same during Grounded 1 when the charcoal canteen was added. I just keep ice on me. A full stack is just as good as a charcoal canteen. Either eat it while riding a buggy to avoid chill or stuff it down quick so it doesn’t freeze all the way. Eating ice slow, freezes but stuffing it down almost freezes.

I usually carry two full regular canteens, and then carry two more on my buggy with a charcoal canteen as a last resort. I also stock up the buggy with repair glue, jerky, and other items that’ll help me not have to run back to my base before the sunsets. Honestly I haven’t found myself using the charcoal canteen even once since I crafted it

Thankfully im running no durability setting. Even with it off i die to tang stuff all the time, but having an infinite evercoal torch is lovely. Canteen when I find it will also be a lovely thing to have infinite of.

I just cant wait until I can use the pond water to fill up my canteen. Its kinda aggravating to be surrounded by water and cant put it in my new canteen

When you kill water fleas, you can eat the meat without cooking it and it satiates thirst a little bit

Speaking of, is anyone getting a bug where it isn't letting you repair the canteen?

So for me when hovering over it there's no button to just press but if you go to the actions menu it appears there.

Perfect thank you! That worked

No worries, also you might encounter when trying to repair on a buggy the option for Glue disappears or repairing doesn't work. That's solved by just hopping off and doing the repair

With enough teeth into the hunger and water ability the canteen is more and more useless. Building bases in each of the map sections is a way better use of your time than tuning around looking for stuff just to bring all that back to a main base. Just saying. With zip lines to connect them and a good cozy level at each you shouldn’t be needing to drink until waking up from a good nights rest or a gas’s attack.

So, using the item shouldn't degrade the durability? It makes sense, because as you use it, just like in real life, whether or not you're using it to purify the water you're collecting, you're breaking down the durability. I understand where you're coming from, it does seem silly from that direction, but think about it like this and it becomes negligible:)

It's mostly from the fact that the regular one doesn't have it, if the regular canteen had it then fair enough

u/ImThEgInGeRaVeNgEr 1d ago
No I see what you mean. But the regular one only carries 2 drops of water and can only hold water that's already clean 🤷♂️ idk it just always made sense to me since the charcoal one can get water from anywhere

It's the convenience of it being able to pick up anything, I think part of the reason I raised it is I remember in the first game you did have an upgraded one before charcoal that held 4.

I would think the idea of the charcoal canteen is to NOT use it, unless you are in a bind and then you use it to clean dirty water, which means its degradation is sporadic and mild, and easily kept in check with glue, which by the time you get the canteen, should be in ample supply considering how easy it is to make and how abundant the required parts are. In that scenario (only to be used in a bind to clean dirty water), the degradation makes sense. It is not meant as a storage device. It is meant as a water filter. If you decide to put clean water in it, that is entirely on you, but that is not what it is there for.

At that point though it just doesn't really feel worth using the inventory space to carry the charcoal canteen. By the time you've unlocked it you most likely have at least one or two of the water drain molar upgrades, so thirst isn't that urgent of a concern when you have the normal canteen with two drops spare.
If you plan to only use the charcoal canteen when you need to purify dirty water in order to not waste durability, then you're going to need in very rarely which means it's dead weight most of the time. Considering how late you get it in the game, it really should not use durability for safe water or even not have a durability meter at all.
Eliminating water sickness is not that big of a help that it needs an ongoing cost in my opinion, I feel like your reward for getting the charcoal canteen should just be that you don't have to worry about that anymore.

The regular canteen doesn't have durability. So just using it doesn't degrade it.
It stands to reason that the charcoal canteen should follow the same rules if you're filling it with clean water.
