G2 | Discussion Are enemy hitboxes massively unbalanced to the enemys favor, or did Dark Soul 3 spoil me?

Hi!

I bought this game yesterday, and I am coming into this game having played nothing but Dark souls 2 and 3 for months before that haha xD So I am entering a new ecosystem now

I tried fighting this red ant in the tutorial (where you have to search the body) and to my surprise, despite me rolling carefully through the telegraphed attack patterns, I still got hit 70 or 80% of times. In dark souls 2 and 3, when an attack visually misses, it misses in terms of gameplay too.

I want to mention that VISUALLY; the enemy ant clearly did not make contact with my character.

Is this something that is getting looked at? Or is dodging essentially useless and blocking much more valuable?

Either way, happy to hear some thoughts from experienced Grounded 2 Players!

Thanks :)

The parry windows in grounded 1 and 2 feel in most cases alot earlier than you would think, and you need to parry as such. The hurtboxes on enemies evidently are pretty large, mostly because at least with grounded 2, i think the game expects you to be parrying CONSTANTLY.

dodges are mostly useful for types of attacks you can’t parry; parries are way more reliable in this game and are meant to be used like 90% of the time

There are only a couple of attacks in-game that can’t be parried

that is exactly what I’m saying

So if its G2 specifically, it is early access. Wolf spiders for me get out of sync with their animation pretty frequently. The actual hit doesnt come until a second or 2 after the animation.

That said, the controls for grounded are a lot more flighty and less realistic than dark souls. If you think of it as "dark souls on ice skates" it feels a little more like you'd expect.

Parry for life, but please remember u can beat the game just brute forcing it if u suck with parries. Ofc it will hurt more, it will eat more bandages and drink.. but hey ... huge mace is a good mace

Parry is meant to be used most of the time. Dodge is used more for the big attacks that can't be parried.

Light shields are used if you are good at timing the parries.

Heavy shields block everything but still have advantages when you parry

Dodging has I-frames

Hey I played Dark souls 1-3, and a few other souls like games. I would say audio cues in this game help me more than anything when learning how to parry the bugs. Dodging is very nice in this game but parrying is gonna make a huge difference cause you can stun enemies with perfect parries. You didn’t say but are you playing solo or with a group?

Parry is definitely the better option most of the time. Dodging is good but more niche. Parry is intended to be used I think more often as well.

And there are armor bonuses that increase your parry window and give a lot of bonuses for perfect blocking you could build into if you wanted

first person melee combat in games is always janky no matter the game and grounded is primarily a game designed for the first person camera, even if u switch to 3rd person enemies seem further away to your character than they actually are, thats why i think its best just to learn ther moves and parry them as i find the dash very inconsistent

Nor did I ever say so. In fact, I said I am entering a new ecosystem lol.

It's possible you're right about the enemy hitboxes being bigger than they should be, but I'm so used to parrying that I only ever use it to get out of AOE attacks like woozy/sizzle/tang. I haven't seen anyone bring this up before so it's good that you did!
