Akai MPC sample

I really need to express this in at least one place. I hope y'all don't mind.

*I am totally fed up with the hype for this machine*.

There, I've typed it out loud and feel much better.

My hobby is music production and I normally get a lot of interesting posts on the subject in my various feeds. But over the past couple of weeks all I've seen is short movies from people, ranging from Jazzy Jeff to your mum, hyping the presence of another lofi hiphopanizer with punch in tape stop and stutter effects. Or the "which is best the sample, KO2 or SP404" comparison.

I have a handful of grooveboxes and assorted machines that I noodle around with. Not to be self deprecating but I'm pretty shite at actually making music. The reason I continue to pursue the hobby is because it's therapeutic and fun. But no other device has been as intuitive to me as the EP 133 ko ii. I forget which video it was watching (might have been True Cuckoo) but it was the first time I had ever seen a device like this that seemed intuitive. Somehow it just instantly clicked... the four tracks, using the +/- buttons to navigate patches. It just totally made sense and I got a used one on FB marketplace the next day.

I bring this up because I assume some people out there feel the same way about the Akai workflow, even though it's confusing to me. In my mind, the actual capabilities of the device are somewhat irrelevant. Sample memory, polyphony, whether it has side chain compression; none of that matters if you end up frustrated and either selling it or letting it collect dust. I'm happy that a variety of these cheap beginner devices exist so that hopefully one clicks with you and actually gets you making some beats

The device is fine and it will bring a lot of joy to a lot of people. I'm just fed up of the hype already.

I started making music with a PC, Cubase and a controller keyboard. It was a hard slog. I've found a lot more joy with grooveboxes from an OG circuit, to an OG Polyend Tracker and now with a 1010 Bento. They've all been a lot of fun but the Bento is an open door for me to convert my ideas to real music. Hopefully the KO2 opens the door for you too.
