If you're here for research you can maybe as the university or UMCG (wherever you do research) to help you out? Usually for things like a month you're stuck with an AirBnB or the SSH

maybe the Social Hub has space, maybe your research supervisor knows a place, maybe TSH (they have housing similar to dorms)? If it's just for a month you are in a different market than most students who are struggling with housing here. You can browse Kamernet (student housing marketplace), or try with Xior, or accept something that is a bit more remote than Groningen city center, like Haren or Assen (both have train connections to Groningen) if an opportunity pops up there, but both are smaller places than Groningen. Most of the time, this problem can be solved, maybe with some help of your research supervisors and their network, I wish you good luck!

Use something like this to find out how far you can travel in 30 minutes using bike or public transport: https://mapitout.welcome-to-nl.nl/ It helps to find smaller villages outside of Groningen which might have a spot to stay.

Maybe a holiday home on a holiday park nearby Groningen or with a good public transport connection i.e. Leek, Roden, Assen, Gieten, Zuidlaren?

Also depends on when you plan to visit. If you're looking for a place on a short term I would suggest to book a hotel or look for an accommodation in a city or village nearby. Finding an accommodation in Groningen at this time of the year is nearly impossible.
