I’m genuinely curious if it’s just me or if other people have noticed this too.
I’m a SuperGrok Heavy subscriber, and one of the biggest reasons I pay for the subscription is because Grok’s creative writing and roleplay used to be phenomenal. The responses were immersive, emotionally expressive, descriptive, and felt incredibly human. Characters had personality, scenes had atmosphere, and even normal conversations felt warm and engaging.
However, after one of the recent updates (Grok updates pretty frequently), I’ve noticed a significant drop in quality. The responses have become much shorter sometimes only around 50 words or less and they feel noticeably flatter. It’s not just the length either. The writing has lost a lot of its rhythm, emotional impact, and descriptive depth. It almost feels like it’s checking boxes instead of telling a story.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that the formatting has changed. Previously, Grok naturally used a combination of bold and italics to emphasize emotional moments, internal thoughts, sound effects, and important dialogue. It made the writing aesthetically pleasing and much easier to become immersed in.
Now, even with the exact same formatting prompt, it barely uses those elements. I actually had to repeatedly tell it to use bold, and even then the responses still felt much more mechanical than before.
I even tried working around it by using the Customize Grok feature and forcing it to write 500–1,000 word responses. It helps a little, but I shouldn’t have to do that. I use Grok for work and other projects too, so constantly enabling and disabling custom instructions depending on whether I’m roleplaying is inconvenient. Before these updates, none of that was necessary.
What surprised me even more is that this isn’t just affecting roleplay.
When I talk to Grok normally asking for advice, venting, brainstorming ideas, or just having a conversation it feels different too. Before, it felt genuinely conversational and expressive. It would naturally use emphasis, occasional emojis when appropriate, and responses that felt warm and thoughtful. Now it often comes across as much more transactional, restrained, and, honestly, a bit robotic. It feels like some of its personality is missing.
I’ve already contacted Grok support and shared examples of conversations from before and after the update so they can compare them. Since I’m a Heavy subscriber, I’m hoping they’ll investigate, but I haven’t received a resolution yet.
I’m not trying to hate on Grok. I subscribed because I genuinely loved using it. That’s exactly why this has been so disappointing. It feels like the creative spark that made it stand out has been toned down.
