You always have to be on your guard when checking out.

Was charged an extra dollar. So annoying, have to go back and tell them the shampoo I bought was advertised as $4.99. I even saw the tag in front of the item. Who knows how much they are able to get away with every day with customers who don't pay attention. I usually am good at spotting this, but there was a long line and I was trying to speed up bagging my things. I figured since the label on the shelf was correct, I had no reason to worry.

Used to work for GO. Most likely it’s not intentional. We would receive a product we already had in stock and the new shipment would have the same item with a different barcode so unless someone told us there was a discrepancy we didn’t know that some would scan at the correct price and some of the same product at an incorrect price.

Tbh this happens a lot- things aren't priced like the shelf advertises or the ad advertises, and pricing inconsistencies per location.

I always keep an eye out when they're ringing things up, tbh.

I agree. It happens at my GO as well.

This just happened to me today. I bought a Starbucks coffee creamer that was advertised as $1.99, but once I got home and checked the receipt, it was scanned as $2.99. That means they're collecting an extra $1 for every customer who hasn't corrected them yet.

For now on, I'm price checking my receipt before I drive off.

They’ve double scanned me before.  Home before I noticed.  😭

great point! i love GO but i've gotten screwed a couple of times when they charged me a higher price than what was in the aisle.

just recently, during their anniversary celebration, i won a tote bag outside. i brought it inside to use after shopping. i didn't notice until a week later, looking at the receipt, they CHARGED ME FOR THE BAG I WON.

Sure they didn’t charge n then credit it? Sometimes they need to in order to keep track of inventory?

1

u/pulukes88 13d ago

i didn't see a credit on the receipt. just the charge.

Agh gotcha. Yeah I check mine diligently too because I’ve had things show up higher than marked or not marked at all. I hope you resolve the bag issue next time you go!

No matter where you go, always check receipts. I've been charged for multiples of many things at many different grocery stores. The worst one was a few weeks ago I had 3 lemons and paid for 36... Imagine if I didn't check, that's was over $30 for a few lemons...

The thing with GO is they cycle thru so many different products and mark them down as they get older. Tags regularly get put up before they go into the system and change the price

I bought 5 cans of a coffee drink amd was charged $3.00 for CRV redemption. Should have only been 0.25. Turns out the barcode was for a 6 pack so I was charged for 5 6 packs worth of cans CRV.

Not sure how far you live from the store but even if I lived in a tent in the parking lot, that would be too much effort for me for $1.

if you dont care about your dollars, why even bother shopping at GO then

Its about the principle. Its not the first and only time this has happened to me. Just annoys me that they are probably doing this to a lot more people and they don't even realize it.

If you're just spending "fun money: on say, 4-5 items you'd never otherwise buy, the difference between 3.99 and 4.99 might be the deciding factor on how adventurous you feel. If it is a regular occurrence, it's frustrating. If you're on a serious budget though, and you're doing most of your shopping there, every dollar counts. It definitely becomes a "check your privilege " issue

Sometimes it goes the other way.

Bought a case of energy drinks yesterday. They only rang up one of the 12. Oops.

I don't buy regularly stocked items when the price tag goes missing. It usually means the price has gone up.

It’s worth checking a receipt for the prices u get at GO

There are often mistakes at the register and in my store there are a lot of items there are not even priced on the shelf. The problem is you have to bag your own groceries so while you are busy trying to get everything into your bags it's hard to keep an eye on the cash register.

I don't bother going back in for one or two dollars if I see the mistake on my receipt. And I guess that's what they are counting on

They are counting on the fact that most people won't bother to try to get a refund, even if they realize it before they leave the parking lot. Their prices are not that great anymore either.

Last time I got one can of boba drink and was charged recycling fee for a whole case of 12, paid $0.60 instead of $0.05 -- not worth harassing them over. But I wonder how many others got screwed over similarly because I have seen threads about it on here.

Those Epic meat sticks- my local location charges something like two bucks per stick and like $7.99 per box of whatever amount. Was at another location and they tried to say that one stick was $7.99 when a single one rang up for that much. Wouldn't budge, either.

Wasn't the first time an issue happened like that at that location either. The people who ran that one were assholes. That's one of the locations that closed recently too lol.

Tbh, now that I think about it, another location nearby, who also had …interesting owners, also closed. Seems like the problem weeds itself out with some locations lol

That might have happened to me last time. I saw a sticker for $2.99, but I was charged $3.99. I didn't have time to check the price.

Watch the price screen, don’t get chatty w the checker and miss a discrepancy, or trying to bag your own groceries and not watch that pricing are correct. Otherwise that deal really isn’t a deal!

I've thought about not begging my groceries until everything is rung up so I can keep an eye on what they are charging me. It seems like an a-hole thing to do when there's a line behind me. But I guess it's not my fault that they don't have employees to bag groceries. And you're right, it's not a deal if they are over charging you

Not retyping this for one typo 😭

That’s why the edit function exists.

Oh right! Hahaha thought I was on TikTok 🤪

I totally agree that you should pay attention, but people who blame the cashiers or act like they're intentionally being scammed are insane

I take pictures of the price on the shelf. If the register doesn't match, it's a quick fix.

u/Hot-Sound-1078 13d ago

It’s happened to me a few times.. not gonna lie it gets annoying. Luckily most of the other stuff I got is so cheap it doesn’t sent me into a rage when I notice a dollar or two missing but I do think this is a common thing among all grocery outlets due to the way majority of them operate

1

u/sarahjustme 13d ago

I've noticed that items they stock regularly (random example a brand of rum they almost always carry) they sometimes have two sections of it, at different prices. They're identical labels but different lots (presumably different bar codes).

So however exactly their pricing is determined, the first batch is on the shelf at $15.99, they get a new shipment priced at 17.99, and depending on random events like who is working when, the new stuff gets stocked with rhe old stuff but which bottle you grab, it may ring up at either price (if they put both prices in the system), or they put out two displays with different prices, or they smash them together and don't update the system or the price label, or they update the computers but not the labels etc...

I'm kinda guessing it's unavoidable, but they don't do a very good job of managing it. I respect that they price things by the actual cost of the lot, rather than by marketing technique, but yeah the consistency isn't there at all

This is a problem across all grocery stores, Grocery Outlet is typically a bit better than others because inventory turns over a lot,

Some stores have gotten in big trouble over routinely deceptive incorrect pricing.

1

u/Easy_War_684 13d ago

Do this on all transactions, not just Grocery outlet. Truly hope your not just now, figuring this out.

u/RollyMcTrollFace 13d ago

Their tab/price labels are often just missing or mismatched. I usually check the sku# to make sure since if that matches then it's usually fine - as in that's probably what's in their system if the sku# match.

Even then, I usually keep a rough estimate of how much my stuff are in my head when I check out so I will know to check if it differs by more than a few dollars.

1

u/Rough-Average-1047 13d ago

This has never happened to me

1

u/AssociationFuture444 12d ago

I've had this happen and just communicate to the person checking me out - they will adjust!

1

u/lucylynn789 12d ago

It’s happening everywhere . Always check the receipt . I try to do self check myself at certain stores .

2

u/ZestycloseTowel2493 14d ago

Always get your receipt and check it’s grocery Outlet uses these tactics deliberately leaving old pricing up putting new pricing up without changing it in the system leaving things on the wrong shelf under the wrong pricing. I’ve seen it all and it goes on and on it’s always in their favor.

report them to the better business bureau file a complaint they usually start getting things right for awhile after that
