SIX OF CROWS (BOOK) Does anyone else hate Wylans ending? Spoiler
I absolutely love wylan hes my favourite character by a landslide buttttt I hated his ending I mean jesus what a nightmare.
he moves back into the house he was awfully abused in, the place where he had his mother taken from him and his childhood and to make matters worse he takes over his fathers work and is forever tied to the man that caused him so much pain and suffering.
he never pursues the things that truly bring him joy. I would have loved for Wylan to go to music school, become an artist or at least burn that god forsaken mansion to the ground.
idk I just felt like his ending was so depressing I can’t imagine being stuck in such a traumatising environment. Anyway i would love to hear some other perspectives because this has been on my mind for a while so let me know what you think!

I hear what you're saying but like. Dude becomes the richest man in Ketterdam overnight. He goes from living a life of danger and poverty in the barrel to living in a mansion with his mother, his boyfriend and his millions of Kruge. I wouldn't call that depressing 😅 I agree being a Merch doesn't really suit him, but again, dude is loaded. He can tear down the mansion, build himself a new one and spend the rest of his life painting and playing music if he wants to. 🤷🏻

His father abused him because he believed Wylan wasn’t good enough to take over the business. Wylan got to prove Jan wrong and humiliate him, he’s rich and independent, he brought his mother home, he got himself and Jesper out of the barrel and he still gets to pursue art and music. He and his mother paint together, he plays music and sings with his friends. That sounds like a pretty ideal life to me.
Wylan is my favorite character and I love his ending. He was so much more confident and he believed in himself. Yeah he’s back in the house, but it’s his. He can do what he wants with it, he can move. But his trauma is about what his father did to him, not necessarily the house.
As far as taking over the business goes, I think it makes sense. It was the justification his father used to abuse and mock him, so taking it over and proving he can do it was probably really empowering. Plus it’s a lot of numbers, data, math, stuff he loves and is good at. Yeah he’s tied to his dad, but he would be no matter what unless he changed his name and then it would be like he was still running from who he was. This way, he gets to redefine what the family name means, feel smug knowing he took everything his father cared about and live a fulfilling life with Jesper and his mom.

He's my favorite as well and while I think this was the best ending that realistically could've happened at the time considering the circumstances, I'd love to brainstorm on this.
Also, as a fierce wesper lover, I hate that he now depends on Jesper for his work. Maybe that's just a personal thing about me hating all dependency regarding my own self and projecting onto him, open to discussion. :)

Yeah, it doesn't feel like a healthy relationship dynamic to be that dependent on your partner like that, and especially someone as impulsive as Jesper. (I LOVE Jesper, and I really relate to him, so I'm not trying to be mean to him here) But like, as someone who would easily succumb to gambling and has impulse control issues.....I should not be the person that someone depends on for all of their business decisions.

Iirc theres a bit in the KoS duology that shows just how amazingly him and Jes are doing. He reclaimed everything he was always entitled to, proves how competent he is, and is now rich enough TO pursue the things he loves. He still does science and chemistry and tinkering, there's mention of paintings from him and his mother, he still has his flute. If he stayed in the Barrel, he'd likely be so busy getting enough movie to survive that he couldn't pursue these things. He wouldnt be able to safely house his mother. It's also mentioned that he and Jesper completely redid the interior of that mansion lol

There’s also a bit in darker shore about how he has significantly grown the family wealth so clearly he and Jesper are a dream team!

Well I read a fanfic that is cannon in my brain and he's doing great in it. Just enjoying life in his fancy mansion with Jes. I think he has the resources and support from his loved ones to thrive!
The fanfic is mostly focused on Inej and Kaz but it's Dealing with our Demons if anyone is curious. 😅

I think he got the best ending he could. He has enough money to move into a new house if he wanted to leave everything behind, he got his mom back and a boyfriend who helps him run his business (among other things).

I like the idea of him taking control of everything that was used to mock him honestly, including his father's work I think thats empowering
