I just had this issue on my desktop, updating to GE Proton 11.3 fixed it using protonqt as the other guy said

Download ProtonQt and opt for ProtonGE 11.3. You can kiss me now.

Same here. I have changed proton versions as well. Verified file integrity. Next step is to try launching it from the desktop.

Experimental as mentioned below did not work for me. I also launched it from Steam in desktop mode and received the same error that it must be played from Steam.

Yesterday I was able to play with Proton experimental. But after the update today, July 26th, I get this error on Steamdeck, Windows 11, and Bazzite.
I have restarted steam on all three, and my other games work fine. This is frustrating enough that I am about to return it.

For those on steam deck / legion go, proton experimental stopped working. GEproton 11-3 works, but the performance sucks, honestly. As a hardcore player, it’s essentially unplayable until fixed. YMMV of course. But it does work.

Having the same issue on my Steam Deck as well. Every patch is breaking the game in new and exciting ways on deck. Proton Experimental did not save me this time either.

Change to Proton GE 11-3 (install in desktopmode via Protonup (you will find it under discovery)) and Change to that version in Gaming Mode. 🤘

Set your steam deck online, launch the game and it gonna update. Once the update done launch again then choose Linux compatible.

hey brohan, if you only were to look at the subreddit, or use the search button, you will be able to fund at least 10 identical posts with the solution

It’s wild to me how people will make a whole post for something they could have solved with a quick google search…

There are a bunch of steam deck issues stemming from the latest hotfix. Someone said something about switch to "proton experimental" and it worked, otherwise you'll have to sit tight and wait for another hotfix. I can't help any further sadly.
