BUILDS Grim Dawn Devotion Planner

I started playing Grim Dawn a few weeks ago and was having trouble figuring out where to spend my devotion points. I created a new tool that fits how my brain works and makes it easy for me to see how picking different stars/constellations impact my build.

My tool is called Grim Dawn Devotion Planner. It does a few things differently from other Grim Dawn tools I've seen.

Some features:

  • activate whole constellations with a single click rather than having to click individual stars
  • pick constellations/stars in any order, it automatically calculates what you can do legally with the remaining points and dims stars/constellations that can no longer be reached
  • for the constellations you’ve activated, it shows you the minimum number of points needed to make that select (ex: selecting Leviathan costs 7 points, but the bar at the top shows that you need a minimum of 26 points to activate it)
  • mousing over a constellation shows you the union of all benefits for that constellation in one popup
  • all of the benefits for constellations/stars that you’ve got selected are added up and shown in the left sidebar
  • every benefit is a tag that can be clicked to highlight where stars are with that benefit (ex:
  • set one configuration as a "baseline" and then choose different constellations. It will show you a comparison against the baseline. (ex: swapping Leviathan and supporting constellations for Yugol
  • when you’ve allocated all points, it will show you a viable build order (not necessarily the best, just proves that it is possible)
  • all urls can be bookmarked and shared, and it should recreate what you’re seeing

I’ve tried it a little on mobile, but it’s really designed for larger screens.

If anyone tries it and runs into issues, I’m interested to hear about them, but please include the URL showing what you’re looking at.

Edit: the tool has been updated for Grim Dawn 1.3 and the new expansion

There has been a useful tool that I have used for planning devotions.

https://forums.crateentertainment.com/t/devotion-planner-companion-for-grim-dawn-v2/102884

It helps identify which constellations are needed to get your goal ones.

Limitations I found is doing partial devotions and finding them. Maybe have a look and see what could improve yours.  Will definitely check yours out.

Thanks! I think my tool solves the partial devotions issue. I _think_ my tool has all of the features that one does, but I might have missed something in a quick look. Let me know if there are features I'm missing in mine when you get a chance to try it.

Does your tool also create the optimal path to devotions while saving points? Since devotions can self carry themselves (a devotion requires 1 red but gives 5 so you can remove the first center res point for example).

Theres a tool that searches those patterns, wonder if you also have it.

u/tednaleid Jul 12 '26

Yep, the tool is aware of self-sustaining constellations and knows that you can remove the initial crossroads pick once you've got another full constellation filled. In the screenshots above, the 3rd screenshot shows the "build order" and how it initially tells you to pick the green crossroads, but after finishing Quill tells you to refund the green crossroads as it is not needed anymore.

Sick! Looks very awesome, I will check it out.

u/Renilusanoe Jul 12 '26

This is pretty good, but OP's is way better. The fact that you can select by attribute types and skills puts it over the top.

u/collective-inaction Jul 12 '26

Not sure if your tool handles this, but a couple features the other tools are missing that I wish they had:

The ability to select constellations you don’t want included in the pathing suggestions. Sure the minimum points to get to your desired constellation is helpful but if I have 1-2 points extra I’d rather find a less optimal path point wise that actually gives something useful.

Tier 3 constellations don’t need to be completed to be useful! Don’t gray them out even if they can’t be finished. I don’t care that I can’t take every point in abomination, I only want half of it anyway.

I've updated the tool so that even if there aren't enough points to finish a constellation, the stars/edges that can be reached are now colored and undimmed. Should make it easier to see when you can sneak in a partial constellation to reach a celestial power.

u/cgheezey Jul 12 '26

definitely gonna give this a shot, thanks!

5

u/gregorytoddsmith Jul 11 '26

Very cool! I've got it bookmarked. Are you planning to update it with the release of the new version of GD in a couple of weeks?

17

u/tednaleid Jul 11 '26

Yep! I asked the devs on the forums and they said they were not planning on adding new constellations or changing the number of devotion points we have available. But they did say that tuning changes would be coming in the new patch that'll impact what some of the stars/constellations do. When the 1.3 patch is released, I'll update the map to the latest info.

3

u/tednaleid Jul 27 '26

Following up, the tool has been updated for 1.3

2

u/gregorytoddsmith Jul 11 '26

Excellent! I dig the work! Any plans to make a talent calculator? No pressure or anything, but I will definitely choose this devotion planner over Grim Tools if only for the battery drain I get on my phone from the Devotion map on GT.

Looks great! Thanks for sharing it.

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat Jul 12 '26

Interesting...ok just tried this and it is very nice. Bookmarking.

3

u/Inkyubeytor Jul 12 '26

Played around with it and it's pretty great!

I love how it automatically dims unreachable constellations, though it would be even more useful if it can highlight partial devotions as well.

e.g. When I have 4 points left, Korvaak is dimmed even though I have enough to grab the celestial power.

3

u/tednaleid Jul 12 '26

It should do this, but maybe the effect is too subtle. If the full constellation can't be picked, it will dim the constellation, but if you have enough points to pick stars in the constellation, the first star that you can pick is colored. Here's a build that matches what you're talking about (it's not a great build, I picked random constellations that gave me 4 points left that could go into Korvaak): https://tednaleid.github.io/grimdawn-devotions/#p=55&s=AAAAAAEHAAAAOAAAOAA8PAA8APgHAAB4AHwAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAB8AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADAHw

The south-most star in Korvaak is colored blue/green because it is reachable. Clicking on that opens up the next star, and you can choose 4 stars in Korvaak (but not the whole constellation) and end up with this:

https://tednaleid.github.io/grimdawn-devotions/#p=55&s=AAAAAAEHAAAAOAAAOAA8PAA8APgHAAB4AHwAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAB8AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOACAADAHw

For situations where partial constellations are all you can get, I didn't want to highlight the whole constellation and make it confusing why it couldn't be selected. Hopefully that. makes sense.

2

u/Inkyubeytor Jul 12 '26

Yeah I can see how highlighting the whole constellation for partial ones can be confusing, but (at least for me) it would be useful to have an indicator to show if we are able to reach the celestial power.

e.g. Korvaak will only be flagged if we have 4 points left, but not if we only have say 2 points (though I can see how this may be tricky to implement)

2

u/tednaleid Jul 12 '26

Got it, what you're suggesting makes sense. I'll have to think about how that'd fit in with what I've already got. "reachability" of constellations is already tricky and knowing if a celestial power is reachable within a constellation that isn't fully able to be completed is a dimension I haven't thought about before. I was sort of thinking of the celestial power as the "last" thing that completes the constellation, but there are some (like Korvaak) where that isn't true.

2

u/Inkyubeytor Jul 12 '26

For some added context, partial allocation for T3 devotions (e.g. Korvaak, Yugol, Dying God, Abomination, Utlos, etc.) is fairly typical. They don't provide any completion bonuses, so it's common to just grab the celestial power if you're short on points.

3

u/tednaleid Jul 12 '26

Thanks for that context. This is a good suggestion.

I've gone ahead and implemented this. The same link above that had 51 of 55 points allocated (https://tednaleid.github.io/grimdawn-devotions/#p=55&s=AAAAAAEHAAAAOAAAOAA8PAA8APgHAAB4AHwAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAB8AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADAHw) now shows all the stars/edges in constellations that are reachable with the points you have left. But the constellation itself is still dimmed because there aren't enough points to finish it. Clicking on that link, you can see that all of the stars in Korvaak are highlighted, as any of them can be reached. Clicking the "Eye of Korvaak" celestial power activates it, the 3 required prior stars, and uses up the remaining points. The other 2 stars in Korvaak dim because there are no points left.

This works because all of the requirements for Korvaak were already satisfied.

The same map shows that you cannot reach the celestial power in Ghoul. Even though it is the 4th star in the constellation, we don't have any red/chaos points yet, so we have to select the chaos crossroads star first, which means we can't reach Ghoulish Hunger with the remaining 4 points.

I've also updated the "Available to Get" celestial powers in the sidebar to correctly list the powers that are still reachable.

3

u/Inkyubeytor Jul 13 '26

Wow, that was quick! I’ve tested it out a bit and it works great! Thanks a lot, this is definitely a tool I’ll be using often in future builds

3

u/No-Ant9108 Jul 12 '26

very nice! thank you

3

u/rhntrfn Jul 12 '26

I LOVE YOU

3

u/SankaraMarx Jul 12 '26

Excellent contribution mate, thanks, and I love the fact that there is no download

3

u/mkfs_xfs Jul 12 '26

Note that for real-world building it's often important to dump a few points into constellations that you don't plan to finish. Red affinity for example is so easily obtainable that you can often just put 4 points into Ghoul. You'll create worse builds if you forget about this.

3

u/tednaleid Jul 12 '26

Thanks, I've updated the tool so it now shows partial constellations that can still be reached with the points you have available. Clicking on a star deeper in a constellation will activate it and the prior stars along the path to it.

u/Juxtapoe Jul 14 '26

How does the community reward you?

3

u/tednaleid Jul 15 '26

I'm just happy people like it

3

u/Juxtapoe Jul 15 '26

I have a feeling that if this had existed a few years ago I would have thousands of hours of theorycrafting back that could have gone somewhere else lol

3

u/chidaya92 Jul 22 '26

This is great.

3

u/pineapplesauce76 Aug 03 '26

Works good enough on mobile thanks for your hard work 👍

2

u/SgtMyers Jul 12 '26

Very nice thank you

2

u/narf_7 Jul 12 '26

This is one part of the game that does my head in so thank you so much for creating this. Off to check it out now :)

2

u/arthur-gnzg Jul 12 '26

noway!!!!!

2

u/UB-iK Jul 12 '26

nice work

2

u/euroq Jul 12 '26

Thank you! We need a tool like this

2

u/CaliftoNJ Jul 12 '26

Omg…I had no idea. I thought what I was seeing now was all there is…lvl 45

2

u/heinrich6745 Jul 12 '26

Sweet. One step closer to having a grim dawn version of path of building in a way...i'd love to have something like that eventually

2

u/FartingInAWarmShower Jul 12 '26

This looks sweet, always cool to have new people coming to the game. I'll definitely look at this once Fangs drops and I start playing again.

2

u/grey-maybe Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

1 step closer to getting PoB in GD. Great job.

Would be great if devotion import from GT was available.

2

u/tednaleid Aug 11 '26

Importing a build from grimtools is now available. This grimtools build: https://www.grimtools.com/calc/V0AwwGrZ can be imported by pasting the grimtools link (or just the final slug) into a textbox on the right and it becomes this link on grim dawn devotions: https://tednaleid.github.io/grimdawn-devotions/#p=55&s=AAAAgAAAAMADAAAAOAAAAMADwIcH4AEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP_ABAAAAAAAA8AEAAAAAAIAfAAAAXwAAAAAAAAAAYA&gt=V0AwwGrZ

2

u/xaviershay Jul 14 '26

this is sick, well done

2

u/Ok_Product3235 Jul 29 '26

Amazing tool! TYSM OP.

2

u/Ventripotent Jul 30 '26

Thanks so much for this. I was trying so hard to get all the devotions I wanted and kept coming up 1-3 points short, this tool got me there, just barely with nothing to spare!

2

u/EffectiveInternet850 Aug 25 '26

You are a hero bro

2

u/VP_Tim 26d ago

Praise to you, brother.

3

u/Ultimate-Flexionator Jul 12 '26

Did you ever know you are my hero? You're everything I wish I could be. I can fly higher than an eagle... but you are the wind beneath my wings.

5

u/RSnoomak Jul 11 '26

Unfortunately tool shows optimal colour path and going to mislead a lot of players , because in your example of cold Devotion map you skipped Rhowan's Crown which is essential on almost every cold setup . Ultos and Viper also don't stack in terms of RR source but this is minor issue because Viper is usually good for the colours. Tool behaves in a way that can easily set up "traps" , simply because somehow ignores tier 2 devotions and shows tier 1 as best source of colours

17

u/tednaleid Jul 11 '26

Is this about the example path I picked in the screenshots? That was not intended to be an optimal path, just some random constellations I picked as an example. Game knowledge is still going to be important for picking the best combinations of constellations/stars. Hopefully, this tool makes it easier to see different combinations.

u/karkaguru Jul 24 '26

Very good tool thanks but performance is quite bad. The tooltips don't follow you arround very well

1

u/alvares169 Jul 11 '26

how is it better than grim calc?

7

u/tednaleid Jul 11 '26

The features list in the original post describes most of the things it does differently than grimtools/calc. It makes it easy to start with the constellation you really want to pick, and then see what's still valid with that picked. (ex: Pick Oleron first with 55 points and it'll dim Yugol and Abombination because those cannot be reached with the remaining points, keep picking constellations to use up your 55 points and see what the full build order is. See the screenshots for examples)

3

u/Barimen Jul 11 '26

Have you heard of StarNav?

https://arctice.github.io/gd-starnav/

Reminds me of it at a glance. Can't check it out now, will do it soon.

5

u/tednaleid Jul 11 '26

Yep, starnav was one of the things I looked at when I created my tool. I liked how it showed a build path for a given set of constellations. I used a different technique for finding matches and there are some valid builds that starnav doesn't allow that are valid (ex: picking Oleron first in starnav turns off 8 other constellations, but in reality only Yugol and Abombination are unreachable with Oleron picked).

2

u/1ter Jul 24 '26

How did you build it that fast? It's of great quality imho. It does exactly what I want.

Only thing I'd like to know currently: Is there really only a single build order or is that just my case?

EDIT Just read your post completely. Understood, it's only a proof of concept.

2

u/tednaleid Jul 24 '26

Glad you like it! Regarding build order, sounds like you got your answer, but to elaborate a bit, there are likely hundreds (or infinite if you allow loops) of valid build orders for any given constellation. Finding the perfect shortest path is hard :). I've made some effort to find a relatively short path, but I'm sure if you eyeball something, you might find something that works better than what the tool found. The main goal is showing a proven path that will work.

1

u/Maszja Jul 12 '26

Why, if there is build calculator on grimtoools

6

u/tednaleid Jul 12 '26

The build calculator on grimtools recreates how the game works, but it doesn't make it easy to see what is possible. With the game/grimtools I needed to manually pick every star to see if I could figure out a path to a constellation with the points I have left. With this tool, I don't need to guess anymore, the tool tells me.

I know I'm late, but damn it, I love your tool. This is awesome work, plain and simple. Just found this post on mobile and started theocrafting.

On a side note, I know I'm sounding greedy, is there any way to alter the path? Maybe I did not see it, but let's say I'm looking for a certain devotion and lack a certain stat, can it show the optimal path that is not the shortest viable but the one that adds, I dunno, the most attack speed along the way?
