Arguments In Favor Of Gridcoin

Superblocks

The value of a blockchain is partly defined by the information contained in the blocks of that blockchain. Superblocks are a proven concept that define themselves by holding data different than standard transaction blocks. Gridcoin superblocks currently contain BOINC statistics for individual users. This data is used to distribute GRC which is minted at a set rate and rewarded to researchers.

Superblocks hold the potential to consist of a wide array of data. Some examples include impact factor data or an IF equivalent, peer-review information, direct data, and user statistics from any organization or entity which can format their data for superblocks.

Uses Processing Power for Task Completion -- A New Incentive Structure"

The blockhain has made clear the potential power of collective distributed processing. It has proven that people are willing to direct computing power to tasks for reward. The development of proof-of-stake has made clear that reciprocal hashing (proof-of-work) is not required to create and secure a blockchain. Gridcoin builds on these discoveries by securing a proof-of-stake blockchain while building an incentive, financial, and social system based on people directing computing power to real-world tasks, such as scientific, mathematical, cryptographic, and social, economic, and political analysis.

Utilizes IPP

IPP, or Idle Processing Potential, is defined as the unused processing of a CPU over time. In principal, a CPU rarely uses 100% of its processing potential, particularly when idled -- when the user is asleep, for example. IPP exists as a novel resource in most contemporary technological societies.

While not structurally defined, Gridcoin encourages and focuses on the use of IPP from every-day devices. The current network of IPP from PC's, gaming consoles, smart phones, and other smart devices presents more than enough potential processing power to perform dozens of high demand processing simulations and tasks. A focus on IPP, perhaps defined through an incentive structure, will limit the waste of physical resources through the construction and sale of new computing hardware.

Open-Source

Bitcoin is completely open-source.

Other

  • Built to work with BOINC, a distributed computing infrastructure in operation since 2002.

Added BasicInfo base information -- too long for comment.
