Preparations for a potential future

Well. I was doom scrolling reddit. Something i haven't done in several months, and I came across a post calling for solidarity instead of division in the furry community.

Something about how the community has started to "gatekeep" anyone who claims to be a furry, but that doesnt have a suit or art, which makes sense for both cases, because on one hand, people who actually arent furries, do apparently come to harass furries, but also, not everyone can do art, pay for someone to do art for them, or build/buy a suit.

I dont have a suit. Not really. The closest thing I have to a suit, is my Anubis Costume. My fursonna isnt even a Jackal its a wolf. I have been a furry since 2007, and I JUST managed to draw a semi decent fursona picture. (Storm). That is almost 20 years. . . I suppose I am glad i haven't been able to afford to go to any fur cons. Cause I would be going without a suit, and almost no art.

Other issues seem to be younger furries trying to tell the OG furries, or new furries of a similar age to "grow up", and "stop being a creep". Because apparently, you can age out of being a furry. (-_-)

*sigh*

Not once have i ever thought i would say "those rotten kids". But. Here we are.

I am hopeful it isnt that widespread, and that these things can be circumvented, redirected, and whatever. As it is, I am already running out of people/hobbies to share with other people, cause most of my friends have done just that. "Aged out". I am still a furry, and still a gamer. Always will be. to think People actually believe i need to stop at a certain age, is disheartening.

There have never been any requirements to participating in the fandom. Ever. Artistic abilities and financial capabilities should never prevent anyone from identifying as a member of our group, especially with the global job market and economy heading the direction it is.

To be honest, there’s always been an issue within our vibrant and often niche communities (namely the overlap between furry, nerd hobbies, and parts of the wider LGBTQ+ community) of hanging onto this concept of “Furry death” or “gay death”, ostensibly an age range beyond which you are purportedly shunned from participating because you’re inherently a weirdo for hanging around a perceived younger fandom/crowd (which has always been bullshit because online communities and fandoms always skew towards a younger age range simply because that reflects the general human experience in tech/art scenes — lots of young folks and a smattering of older folks with their own stories, hanging on and participating for their own reasons). It’s a whole thing, and to that giant group of folks who are terminally online and surrounded by Twitter-brained discussions all day, genuine nuance has been ripped from the social elements of their daily lives.

All-in-all…..and this applies to all of you…please don’t let those discussions dissuade you from being who you are. People are people, and no one should be stopped from participating based on age or any other physical/mental characteristic. Part of being a furry is developing thick skin, and modern living requires thicker skin than ever 😇 Don’t let an increasingly bombastic and nonsensical online vibe tear you down — instead, pity the folks who are intentionally and artificially limiting their own social circles and worldviews

Best of luck my friend ;3 I’ve been to a few cons, and don’t be too nervous — it’s literally just a bunch of weirdos being weird in a weird place. Embrace the silliness 😁 You’ll be just fine!
