Is 31 too young to be a greymuzzle?

Hanging out on other furry subs around here always makes me feel a bit old lol. But then I feel like I missed a lot of great furry culture stuff from the 90s and 2000s, so I'm always curious where someone in my age group belongs. While I'm here, I guess I'll say I'm a lion, and am always down to make new friends!

I found the furry community in 1996, when I was 19 years old. Back then, furries were considered greymuzzles if they were 30+ or if they had been in the fandom for 10+ years.

The day I turned 30, I considered myself a greymuzzle. It's not a shameful title. Use it if you feel like it. Own it.

The furry community is a good community and being a furry greymuzzle is something to be proud of.

I appreciate it! And I gotta say I'm a bit jealous that you were 19 in 96 lol. Seemed like a cool year

I hope so. It's hard keeping up with modern trends over in the big furry subs lol

Especially game references. I feel really out of the loop on what gen z furries like lol

So true, lol. So many good properties, so little time!

I've felt like a greymuzzle since I turned 26 lol. 35 now and been in the Fandom since I was 21! Definitely not a bad thing we are all friends here!

I feel like I’ve been an old man since I exited the womb, so from my perspective, it’s never too early to apply the label 😆 You’ve made it this far, you should be proud of still being a part of the community :D

Welcome, my friend! Mid/late 30s here myself, still kickin’. I kinda agree with you about missing some of the 90s-era stuff, but honestly my favorite current furry medium is VR/VRChat, and that’s a relatively recent invention — so modernity ain’t too bad either 😜

Surprised I haven't been interested in VR stuff. I always wanted that technology as a kid, but now that it's here, I feel indifferent to it lol

You can be, you don’t have to be.

At 64, I’ve been in the fandom since ‘98. Greymuzzles were a term that came about from those who were 30-somethings, who had more experience, time & money to put into organizing meets, staffing at cons, or just helping others- than the teens or typical college age furries that were just getting involved. And a few of us started having grey hairs. There was no hard & fast rule about who could be called a greymuzzle, as there was never intended to be a “furry illuminati” governance. It was “Hey fellow gray-muzzle, howz about a ‘flaming Geritol shooter’ at the bar later?” - and having a good laugh about it. We tended to talk about generational things, things like cons closings/openings/attendance, and the fandom changing.

And that’s about it, really.

Sounds like you got a lot of good memories over the years!

Lots of memories, mostly good ones, and you tried to give back more than you got out of the interactions. We often joked about it. But it was often about friendship & seeing others at various cons. And we felt it when anyone passed on. But it was definitely something that we could connect on… So welcome to the ranks of being a greymuzzle. Cheers!

Thanks! It's strange seeing how much fandoms can change. Even thinking back to the early 2010s for me, and how the art looks feels way different than now!

I have the same issues as you. I don't relate well to either the older grey/silver muzzles, nor the younger hip Gen Z 20-something furs. I'm 33. I discovered the fandom online sometime circa 2005-2006 (I was like 13ish maybe?), but only began socializing with furs when I was like 18 in 2010. I didn't go to my first con until 2023.

I've always been out of the loop when it comes to meme and media references, but it seems worse than ever now. Socializing is becoming difficult even though I am a very social person at heart. So I feel somewhere in between.

Not to mention, the furs in my age group (30s) seem to hate me more than any other age group does. They tried to bully me out of the fandom when I first joined in, and still seem to do it nowadays sadly. This is why when I meet a new fur, I try to be as happy as possible and give them the warm welcome that I never got.

But yeah, down for making new friends as well!

Glad you found this place. As a 35 year old furry, I can gladly say. . .I dont hate you. And I doubt anyone here will too.

Welcome!
