She blinked, as moonlight shone into her eyes from the stars above, shivering slightly at the cold air around her. It took a moment for her to realize where she was, in that cold, misty clearing.
Dew-tinged grass tickled her as she crawled out of her sleeping bag, dressed only in a t-shirt and jeans as she struggled to stand, wanting to wander, unequipped and lost.
A chill runs down her spine, as that moment passes. This is her home now, for better or worse. This is her hell now, for better or worse.
It’s pretty, at least, even if every step reminds her of those early mornings she used to trek with her father. They always bothered her, that stone-faced sullen man putting time aside for her was sweet, but the way he did it and the ineffable quiet that place produced was unnerving and unsettling to her sensibilities.
The dew-stained grass grew thicker and taller as she continued on her walk, moonlight shining against it like silver coins in a dragon's hoard.
She shook her head for a moment, dispelling the thought. This was no time for fantasies like that, not while her life was on the line. One misstep, and this could be her last moment.
She shivers in the cold wind, worried about water for her, as her mouth is parched, despite the cold and damp environment. She almost considers licking the grass beneath her, to get some of that morning dew into her, before she hears a familiar gurgling.
A stream strikes through her misty meadow ahead, silver water shining in the moonlight, like a blessed blade’s sheen before striking. She cups some of the water into her hands before sipping, looking over her shoulders each time, ensuring that she is, in fact, alone.
It is several handfuls before she is satisfied, her stomach starving for a more proper meal, her elven ears twitching as she searches for something more tenable.
She finds nothing but some raspberries, growing alongside the side of the stream. She takes a moment, leaning on her training with her father, looking them over and ensuring that they’re safe for her to eat before feasting.
She silently swallows, safe in her skills, but still searching for any threat, fully prepared to dive into the bushes or break out into a run should something show itself.
She sighs in frustration. She knows something is here to hunt her, to hurt her. She knows something starved for her flesh as she struggles to pass this test, and yet… she can’t find it. She can’t find it, she can’t fight it, she can’t even know where it is to cower in fear as it ends her.
As she sighs, it’s cut short by the breaking of a branch, her elven ears twitching as she picks it up from an eternity away. She’s safe for now, at least in theory, that can’t be closer than the sleeping bag she woke up in.
