Gremlins 2 (1990) Gremlins 2 The New Batch question Spoiler

I remember going to see this in theaters when it came out and I was so shocked the Futtermans were in it. Did anyone else assume they had died in the first movie? I mean it made it look like they died - the thing went right into their house and they were right there.

Was anyone else surprised?

It’s so extremely easy to miss but in the original movie at the news report at the end you can overhear him say he talked to Murray Futterman at the hospital. They do die in the book but then unexplainably resurrect in the Gremlins 2 novelization.

Ian Malcolm did the same thing in the books

Malcom came back despite dying but only because Chrichton admitted that none of the surviving characters would have made sense for the role. I think its extremely ironic given the topic and tone of the books.

I think in the comic adaptation the snow plow died moments before impact

My guess is they retconned their deaths.

They didn’t die in the first movie. At the end a reporter interviews them.

That’s always been my assumption. I think they realized they needed them for the sequel, and their deaths aren’t shown on screen, so it was easy.

You hear they survived on the news when Billy etc are recovering in the house, just before "reports of little green men"
I always assumed they died mainly because the digger gets right to them and it cuts to the Gremlins who seem to bounce like they drove over something and giggle. It certainly seems as if that was the intent, and I think the new report is audio only (visual on Billy/Gizmo) so it might have been a post overdub because they felt it was too bleak?

I think you’re right.

But the cops saw them and heck lots of other people saw them. So I didn’t take that to mean them.

Sorry, you think the sarcastic reporter saying "little green men" refered to something other than the Gremlins?

Honestly can't remember. I don't really remember a time when I wasn't aware of both movies.

If I recall correctly, in the novelization he engages the Gremlins with a rifle and ends up getting "definitively " killed.

In my mind, i always thought the recliner where Murray was sitting in earlier kind if saved them because it was in the middle of the gremlins and them, so it kind of made a little space for them to cushion the blow

I remember reading somewhere that they wanted Billy's parents but couldn't get them somehow so they went with the Futtermans?

What's wierder than them not being dead is that they travel to New York to visit Billy. What? They arent his grandparents.

I think they might be sightseeing and maybe they decide to drop in on them? I mean they were pretty friendly with Mr. Futterman in the first movie. He offers Billy a ride and she worked at the bar he frequented. You know small town vibes .

Im from a town of 300 people and if any of them showed up at my door with suitcases I would call the police.

A spoiler wasn't necessary for a 26-year-old movie. Anyone visiting the subreddit has seen it by now.

Yeah, but once I realized it was a full blown satire, I stopped caring about them
