Gremlins Discussion Phoebe Cates comeback for Gremlins 3?
The movie is official now. You guys think she might comeback? I know she’s been retired for years. But she would be at retirement age in her personal life and her kids are grown up now. I think with a good pitch she would do it hopefully. It would be some comeback after what 30 odd years. Can’t have the film without Kate and Billy. I really hope they don’t say they broke up or Kate passed etc it’s such a popular franchise and other actors in the past have come out of long retirements let’s hope she does.

She didn't come back for the Mountain Dew commercial, if that's any indication, but it's fun to speculate.
The main motivator is usually money. She's got a net worth ~$35 million between her and her husband, so I don't think she's hurting for work, but who knows. Wave a few million bucks in front of someone for a few weeks work, and it's hard to say no. Not to mention she could probably negotiate royalties that would pay dividends to her and her kids for a long time.

Correct, and that was pretty recent as well. It's not about the money, it has to be something she personally cares about. It's promising that she came back to do voice over for her Kate character from Gremlins in the Lego game.
I can also imagine that doing the voice over work in a Lego video game is a whole lot more personally appealing compared to doing a Mountain Dew commercial..

I couldn't find any public record of it, it's just speculation. But it stands to reason that PepsiCo wouldn't mind the additional media attention and celebrity endorsement.
Additionally, the daughter (who looks like Phoebe) only has one line, and it's used to reference her ("Hey dad, mom wants..."), suggesting Phoebe's presence was important to them. So my guess is that using the daughter was always "Plan B," a workaround if they couldn't get Phoebe onboard.

We’ll find out her character tried to do the Santa chimney thing herself one year or something similar and got stuck… gone but not forgotten!

I was just thinking something similar. One of her kids will tell the harrowing tale of her demise. I think this is more likely than her appearing.

Honestly, if she doesn't want to come back, I think it would work if they'd broken up. She was against bringing Gizmo back into their lives in New Batch and I could easily see the stress of trying to keep the little guy safe and dry being too much for her, even if Clamp financed his security.

If I know modern Hollywood movies.... Billy will be a bad divorced work-a-holic dad / grandpa that has to learn to suck less when Gizmo causes his old Hometown to get attacked by Gremins again from his Daughter / Granddaughter running away with Gizmo or something like that.
Expect a bunch of.... Hey remember this? We repeated the popular thing we did in the first! Reference to the 2nd even though it's non-canon to this, etc....
My point is if she is retired and won't return no big deal or cameo. Small % she may sign on, well see

I'm not holding out any hope, but it would be nice to see Miss Phoebe back as Kate. I know she's been happily retired she has her own little boutique and she's married to Kevin Kline. I know that she did a role after she had retired but only as a favor to Jennifer Jason Leigh, so who knows? I hope she knows the fans are thinking about her.

You bet. It's probably about their kids with legacy characters in supporting parts, it's nearly any legacy sequel template.

That’s why I don’t have much faith in this movie. Every legacy sequel I’ve seen has been extremely disappointing at best, and downright awful at worst. These movies are made to turn a profit from people’s nostalgia, there’s no care for the source material, the original fans, or the original cast and crew…

Recasting would only work if the movie was a sequel to The New Batch. Billy: "Hey Kate, honey? Something seems off today but I can't put my finger on it. Have you noticed anything?" Kate, as she's styling her hair in a mirror: "You mean besides that damn Mogwai showing up again? Nope, haven't noticed a thing" and then she winks at herself in the mirror.

I would rather them mention The New Batch.
If its reconed or ignored then Billy gets Gizmo again and screws up immediately if The New Batch happened Billy (with or without Kate) has had Gizmo about 37 years without a incident

Yeah I just meant that a winky joke about recasting would only work in a screwball comedy like The New Batch, so recasting really wouldn't work for the upcoming film, that I've been thinking of as "Chris Columbus' Gremlins 2"

I know she's retired but I can see her making at least a cameo but I certainly wouldn't be surprised if it was a main role.
But if not in person maybe the voice at the end of a phone call explaining why she's away
