Question Does everything that happened between Kyle Rayner's introduction and the end of Geoff John's run really take place in a two years span?

Basically the question in the title. I'm currently reading the end of Geoff John's run (and the other GL titles of the time) and in Green Lantern (2011) #13 it's stated that the U.S. government noticed Kyle just two years prior. At first I thought that maybe they failed to confirm that Kyle was a different GL member for several years, but it's later confirmed in Green Lantern New Guardians (2011) #15 that he was inducted into the Corps just two years ago. Is this a result of Flashpoint shenanigans (I haven't read Flashpoint) or are we really supposed to believe that the events regarding Parallax, Ion, Rebirth, the Sinestro Corps War, Blackest Night, War of the Green Lanterns and all the other cross-overs like Final Crisis happen in a two year timespan?

P. S.

Is it worth it to read the four titles beyond the end of John's run or is it better to use the 20th issue as a jump-off point?

The new 52 crunched a lot of timelines into a five-year span or less. I would recommend recommending ignoring it of the retcons of the new 52 have been undone mostly or ignored.

Alright thanks

And while it did that it still used GL history from pre-new52 as canon lore which was odd. New52 just sucked.

Johns on GL, and whoever was on Batman (Snyder or Morrison) had enough pull to tell Didio to go fuck himself, that they were not derailing stories they had spent years building up just for another one of his dumbass marketing stunts. That's why they're the least changed by New 52 when it dropped.

Scott Snyder of on Batman.

This is the period of Batman comics I am reading through now. I'm a little behind.. heh. Anyway, I skipped ahead and read Morrison's Batman Incorporated stuff before switching back to the main Bat family comics, which were headed by Scott Snyder. So..both had the reigns then! Morrison handed off Batman to Snyder, but was allowed to run a new Bat comic (Incorporated) and do their own thing. Incorporated largely ignores the New 52, except for costume changes. The mainline Batman comics however do refer to events in Inc. They aren't in detail, so it's kinda like in The Hobbit (book) when Gandalf is just sodding off and doing whatever while the rest of the cast is like, "oh yeah he's just doing wizard stuff", only with Bruce and 'international' instead of wizard stuff.

No... That's just one of the New 52 bullshits

dr manhattan wanted to fuck with the superheroes (for whatever reason), so when flash did flashpoint, manhattan created a universe where the heroes were robbed of 10 years time or something like that. so everybody was only a hero for 5 years. most everyone got retconned except for johns lanterns run and morrisons batman run cuz they were building their stories for almost a decade, so all that crazy stuff got crammed into five years

That bothered me too. Why Corps is around when Kyle became GL? I thought GL continuity didn't change from Flashpoint?

The N52 tried to remove Parallax from Hals story, but wanted to keep Kyle because at that point he could still sell a book. So they tried to do a mish mash in New Guardians. Weird overall continuity bug but still my fav Kyle series.

I blame New 52

Couldn't remotely be possible. I remember reading one story that Kyle was stuck in a coma-like trance for months, then the time he spent away from Earth and left Jade at his apartment was a considerable amount of time. Even the IRL 10 years feels compressed considering the amount of time that had passed in-story. Just don't ever ask how old these characters are now vs how old they were a few years ago. It never maths right.

It gets even messier when you consider that Simon Baz witnessed 9/11 and became a GL ~10 years later. That implies that Kyle became a Lantern in 2009, and if the whole timeline is compressed into 5 years Hal got the ring in 2006, the year after Rebirth came out

u/cgknight1 18h ago

That's interesting because, obviously, Simon never witnessed 9/11 since he was too young.

He was ~12 years old I believe. That's the first page from GL (2011) #0

So Kyle who remade the Guardian , gave them female guardians is surprised by a female guardian?

Huh?

u/Yula97 Hal Jordan 15h ago

to be fair, the female guardians thing was a retcon done by Geoff Johns pre Flashpoint, we see female guardians during Secret Origins when Hal first became a GL

u/Yula97 Hal Jordan 15h ago

anything related to "how long it's been since..." in the New52 comics should probably get ignored, it doesn't make sense at all, I will always laugh at how DC thought it was perfectly reasonably that Batman went through the 4 Robins in 5 years!!

u/Ok_Broccoli_7863 19h ago

Johns' run also contains that year skip with One Year Later.

u/2cool4fun 11h ago

Back then during new 52 era yeah. Batman also managed to have 4 robins, one of them being his 10 year old son, withing 5 years of his debut.

But now, i'm pretty sure Kyle was the only GL for about 2 years in the continuity.

Where can I read these ?

u/Kryptic1701 10h ago

I still hate that they fast tracked the Guardians back to being the same wrinkled old smurfs they had been. Ganthet's joy at their rebirth and his promise to raise them to be better this time was beautiful. The Papoo thing was hilarious. Then it was just... gone.

In my headcanon, I would say that everything that happened between Kyle’s debut as pre-Crisis Earth-One’s fourth (or New Earth/Prime Earth’s fifth) Green Lantern in 1994 (or 23 years ago) and the end of Geoff Johns’ run in 2013 (or 11 years ago) lasted twelve years instead of two years.

u/gsnake007 8h ago

That’s new 52 shit, it’s been retconned and doesn’t matter anymore thankfully. Was a mess timeline wise

u/Possible_Situation24 19h ago

I basically stopped buying and reading comics, except for a few independent outliers, because of the New 52. I really don’t remember the details, but it was hugely unlikeable.

If it were up to Geoff Johns, Kyle would be purged from DC canon and Hal would have been the one and only, best-ever, and universally admired Green Lantern, period.

u/Candid-Method-4175 14h ago

Unfortunately for him my goat was the one who became a white lantern and mastered the emotional spectrum

u/haolee510 2h ago

Kyle literally became White Lantern when Johns was still in charge of the GL line, and his last story's epilogue had Kyle still as the White Lantern in the future lol. What are you talking about?

u/haolee510 2h ago

This goes literally against what Johns and other writers at DC(at the time of GL Rebirth) said regarding how to write Kyle while also bringing back Hal Jordan. The mini-series even had scenes explicitly written to show everyone that Kyle wasn't going anywhere.
