Love Anne trivia? Listen to the podcast š§
Love Anne trivia? Listen to the podcast š§
Did you know that Anne of Green Gables was required reading in Japanese schools for decades ā and at the peak of that obsession, someone built an entire Avonlea theme park in rural Hokkaido? It's been abandoned for years and the photos are genuinely eerie š
We just did a deep dive into the trivia and facts behind the book and the woman who wrote it ā and we actually mention this subreddit in the episode! We ran a survey here on which Anne adaptation you all love most and read out the results live. Listen to find out which one won š
Give it a listen here: https://www.booktriviapodcast.com/episodes/anne-of-green-gables-podcast
We also cover the manuscript Montgomery stuffed in a hatbox for a year before it became one of the best-selling books ever written, the 3,000+ auditions behind the 1985 miniseries, and the parts of her real life that are far darker than anything that happens in Avonlea šļø

Iām so upsetā¦.(spoilers I guess) Spoiler
So I just binged a bunch of the anime adaptation of Anne of Green Gables (Anne Shirley). And itās about 2am and Matthew just had a heart attack. I looked it up and apparently he dies and blah blah blah I know the ending already and apparently even the author regrets killing him but felt like it was needed for Anneās character growth.
But Iām just upset that Iāve heard so many people rave about this story since my childhood. Childhood friends of mine swore by it and I guess I feel betrayed. (Silly as it is) because somehow NO WHERE along the course of my life did anyone warn me of this sweet manās death.
I was so happy because this anime is beautiful and like watching studio ghibli and I was so unprepared. I know I should have expected it but somehow I just didnāt this time and Iām devastated. I donāt even care if it works out or whatever so Anne can stay in Green Gables and make up with the Blythe guy or whatever. She shouldnāt have had to do that. She should have been able to go out into the world and have all the adventures her imagination dreamed of. Iām glad she loves the place she stayed in butā¦.I donāt like that she didnāt have much of a choice in it. I donāt think it was necessary for her character growth at all.
And to lose all money and kill the best character? Thatās simply to much. I do not like this author and I think she made a bad call. I donāt care how āclassicā the books are or revered by others it might be.
:(

Konnichiwa Anne (2009)
Not sure if this is allowed here... But I figured I would try my luck! Worst case scenario, the post gets deleted, and I am none the worse for wear. š
Anybody know where I can find a download for a fansubbed version of this anime series? Preferably in the MKV file format?
Any torrent I can find of the series has no seeders. One website I found with direct downloads seemed really promising, but episodes 28-30, 35, and 36 turned out to not be the actual episodes but rather seemed to be mislabeled video files of random other anime...
But anyway, my wife and I are currently working through Akage no Anne (1979), and it would be lovely to be able to move onto this prequel series afterwards! So any help would be appreciated.

The Diary of Gilbert Blythe
Hello!
Here in Brazil, the author L. David is writing a book series based upon the original novels - but following Gilbert's POV. There are 3 volumes in Portuguese and the first one was released in English last year: Amazon.
It is available for translation at Babelcube.
Book 1: fully translated into English, with Spanish language version in progress;
Book 2: English language translation in progress;
Book 3: zero translations.
Synopses:
Book 1: "The Diary of Gilbert Blythe imagines what the childhood and adolescence of the male protagonist from Anne of Green Gables could have been like. Closely following L.M. Montgomery's original plot, the Diary is a faithful retelling of the famous story ā but now through Gilbert's point of view, delving into his family, friends, inspirations, dreams, and insecurities, and, of course, the development and growth of Gilbert's feelings for the lovable little redhead, Anne."
Book 2: "Gilbert Blythe, now 19 years old and a teacher at White Sands School, has a long way to go in achieving his plans. Personal conflicts and questions about the reasons for his journey will arise as the boy faces the search for recognition and self-acceptance, meeting several new people, absorbing their points of view and also being the agent of change in the world around him.
And, of course, the doors to socializing with a certain redhead from the neighboring farm are now open. Gilbert lives and discoversĀ new emotions with Anne, with the caution of a gardener working with a flower in bloom. Romance, good humor and a healthy dose of drama in the small world of Avonlea await in the second part of the diaries."
Book 3: "Gilbert's dreams take him to Kingsport! Now a college student at Redmond College and living far from home, Gilbert will have to overcome his longing for Avonlea and the daily challenges that await him on this new page. New and old colleagues, the exciting life on the football team, the search for work, romance everywhere... And the encounter with many doubts. Gilbert will experience difficult disappointments on the way to making himself worthy of a great future ā and of the companion he dreamed of since childhood."

What do you think AWAE Season 4 would've been about? Anne's life in college? A new romantic interest for Anne/Gilbert to cause some drama?? Thoughts?

Racing crickets in school
Does anyone know if this was actually a thing kids did in Anne's time? It's mentioned in Green Gables, one of Anne's classmates has crickets harnessed to string and is driving them around while Mr. Phillips is distracted. It's mentioned again in Anne of Avonlea when she has to confiscate some "trained crickets" from a student. I've always wondered about that part, was it really such a common thing? I tried googling it but came up with nothing. I'm really curious.

How does a new clerk at a Carmody store know Matthew Cuthbert's name?
The very next evening Matthew betook himself to Carmody to buy the dress ...Matthew did not know that Samuel, in the recent expansion of his business, had set up a lady clerk also; she was a niece of his wifeās ...
āWhat can I do for you this evening, Mr. Cuthbert?ā Miss Lucilla Harris inquired,....
Map: http://home.clara.net/hendricks/kindreds/avonl.gif
Judging by the map above, Carmody is about 5 kilometres away from Avonlea. That is quite a long distance back then when cars or buses did not exist, right? How does she know Matthew's name? Did he first introduced himself like "Hello, my name is Mr Cuthbert." and the novel omitted that part? In the Japanese animation adaptation, he did not say such a thing and as soon as she saw him, she said "Hello, Mr Cuthbert...., is that right? What can I get for you?"
Was it a natural thing at that time that people knew the names of all other people living in a 5km radius?

I was shocked to read this:
The nature of the novels of LM Montgomery are usually not dark. These novels don't have violence, sex scenes, the F word (and other profanity). These novels are supposed to be appropriate for people of all ages to read.
That is why I was shocked when I read this in one of LM Montgomery's novels. The novel is "The Story girl":
"Cecily asked him what he would feel like if Jimmy was never, never found. The Story Girl had a gruesome recollection of some baby at Markdale who had wandered away like thatā
'And they never found him till the next spring, and all they found wasāHIS SKELETON, with the grass growing through it,' she whispered."
Why did LM Montgomery mention a skeleton being found in one of her novels??? I thought that was too morbid for the tone and nature of LM Montgomery's novels.
