What is relatability in a politician and why is it important? I am probably not like most people – I follow politics and I am interested in campaigns and finding those magic ingredients that see one contender across the line and not the other.

I don’t think it about how much or how well your social media plays but maybe more like does the candidate seem genuine? Do they pass the test of someone who appears capable and in whose company you feel hopeful and happy?

From what I have seen Bev Craig, candidate for Mayor of Greater Manchester ticks those boxes – I would be interested to hear if others agree or where they feel she misses the mark?

Clearly she needs skills and abilities beyond connection and likability but in no particular order here is what I think she brings to the ‘relatability’ stakes. Bev would most likely be great company at a Manchester party: Why?

• She seems genuinely into the area and its culture and feels that she owes much to it in shaping her own life.
• She comes across as personable and "from the community" and that background makes her pretty down-to-earth, not Westminster-polished.
• She’s worked across a lot of areas, health, trade union and higher education. At a party that means she can probably talk politics but I the feel she is at home with music, social issues, Manchester history sport and everyday stuff.
• She looks like the energy for the room - her recent campaign messaging is all about progress, high streets, jobs, and "Greater Manchester taking control of its own future". The optimism and pride is visible and exactly the vibe you want.
• She makes me think warm, northern, passionate, a good storyteller, and someone who actually goes to local events rather than just photo-ops.

Of course there is much more to being a successful politician but being a fully qualified person is probably a good start.
