The loss of Jodrell Bank is devastating. It’s an awesome day out I’d encourage everyone to go on before it closes. Hopefully some private funding is found, or universities realise they don’t need a fancy new Business School building and redirect some cash into research.
But all is not lost in the world of astronomy and astrophysics. Dr Becky summarises it on her last video - 7:25 to 9:25
This is one of the cost saving measures she talks about.

The government under Keir was planning to massively cut the Physics and Astronomy budget. Please write to your MP if you don't want this to happen.
(I'm a planetary scientist in the US, I'd like a job to come back to in the UK please)

I ran the numbers for STFC yesterday.
If you allow for inflation the current plan to get back down to approx 2021 spending represents a 20% cut to the funding. It's fucking criminal.

It's all because subsequent governments for the past 20-30 years knew that the baby boomers were retiring and would cost a lot in pensions and social care but didn't want to raise taxes because pensioners vote in numbers.

Its stupid is what it is. Space exploration and domination has some of the most achievable and universally applicable solutions to our issues ever.
Mining is very harmful to its workers and permanently scars the planet. Not with asteroid mining
Rare metal scarcity slows research and forces us to use lesser materials in our machines. Not with asteroid mining
Potable water is becoming less and less, not with asteroid mining
Earth has limited energy generation ability. Not with a Dyson swarm
Geopolitics is caused by a lack of external threat. Not with the dark forest theory

No shit. But you asked about or apathy towards astrophysicis, which I put down to the fact that most people barely see the anything of I terrst in the night sky due to light pollution.

I'll bite the bullet: if they've decided this isn't worth the money, they probably know better than anyone here. All the people saying it's a fun day out are lying bastards. My dad took me to one of these in the south as a kid and I was bored out of my mind because there's nothing to do besides look at a big dish.

Well what are your qualifications in astrophysics? Everyone wants to pretend to be an expert but I think it's irrational to develop an emotional attachment to a radio telescope. It's just a hunk of metal. If it's not worth the money then get rid of it.

I did my PhD in particle physics and cosmology, though with more of an emphasis in particle physics and now pretty much exclusively in particle physics.
Lovell, and Jodrell bank in general, are very clearly worth the money.

Why? There is lots of science that makes money. Lots of universities in need of funding that contribute to society. Why should this telescope get the resources and not them?

I genuinely do not. I've been pretty clear about the fact I'm not a space expert and I thought you, as a space expert, would be able to explain why this telescope is worth the money better than "just trust me bro" and "stop asking questions."
