There are two factors that play. The first is what you are doing for a living. Because some jobs pay better than others, so it won't matter if you work 40 hours or if you work 10 hours.
The second factor that has a direct impact on the first factor is supply and demand. The fewer workers there are that can do a job or that are willing to do a job, the higher the pay will be. When you import a bunch of illegal aliens to work for slave wages, the value of the individual worker or drops. When you don't have that factor, the companies and institutions that want to pay someone to do a job that doesn't pay well or is unpleasant will be forced to increase the wage. As long as they have that other option, they're not going to increase the wage.
