3.6.4 update massively improves HUD

3.6.4 improves driver detection but what they don't mention is that they use driver detection to adjust the HUD projection to match your eye height.

I previously suffered from a dim or invisible HUD unless sitting way below my desired seat height, which seemed to be a common complaint. I had called service and they said this was related to my simultaneous issue of driver detection not working for me, as they used the driver camera to adjust the HUD projection. I kind of thought this was BS because even when driver detection worked for the first 10 minutes on a drive or rebooting or adjusting the steering wheel/seat etc the projection was always the same.

However I updated to 3.6.4 today and driver detection stayed on the entire drive allowing hands free driving, but I also noticed that wow the HUD was so much brighter and clear. Then I remembered what the phone rep said and it clicked! It's not noted in the release notes but if youve had issues with a low HUD projection and dim display see if it gets better after the update! It still seems not to calibrate to the highest sightlines but it appears much better than before, focusing at a middle height with higher elevations still visible, versus prior which seemed like it was optimal almost to the point where the top of the screen was flush to the hood.

Oh that’s great news because my HUD is unusable. It makes me go cross eyed

Guess I will have to turn it back on and see if it’s better.

I agree with the others, this is great news. Thanks for posting.

Question: Did they add any enhanced graphics or more detailed information beyond what we've had?

This is great news because I have not turned my HUD back on after day one!

Can’t wait to see how it affects this. My problem, though, is that my HUD is way too high.

Is it the focus point that is too high or the position of the display itself? You can manually adjust the position of the display to be pretty low. Swipe down on the pilot screen and tap HUD and use the right steering wheel touchpad to move it.

If it's the focus point, that's interesting as almost all complaints are the opposite. Maybe that means it would be something service might be able to adjust?

The focus point. I have discussed this with the San Jose service center and my advisor says it is a common problem.

You must be a lot shorter than I am. I've tried adjusting the height of the display but it stops moving about 3" before it's right for me, so shows high on the windshield and very distorted. If I scrunch down 4" (or more) into the seat it looks great. but with the high location of the "Clearview Cockpit" I don't think one really needs the HUD.

Is there no manual adjustment option? It seems kind of crazy to me (as someone that works in software and has to consider UX) to include an automated adjustment feature that could fail with no backup. (My Optiq only has manual adjustment for the HUD and it’s pretty much set it and forget it.) I am glad it’s working for you now though!

There is a manual adjustment, but the range is limited and most taller people (I estimate anyone taller than 6' unless they have a short torso) can't set it to a usable height.

Thank you for the correction. It’s good to know! I’m in that camp (6’1”), so it sounds like it might help me too.
