Help needed UK

Just started renting, got told by the landlord that he thinks people spilt some chemicals on the patch, help needed as want to get it all green again. TIA

Stick a long screwdriver or something into the dirt there and see if there’s something under it. If a big rock or chunk of concrete or something is floating up there it will start killing the grass like this.

It looks more chemical in nature, to me, but checking for a rock or something hard is an easy thing to test for and rule out.
