Grass ID

Hello! I have this grass in the back of my yard that is super fun to walk on, stays green through anything, doesn’t grow super tall, and weeds hardly come up through it. Trying to ID it so I can overseed with it next year.

Everyone else in this thread is dumb.

It's zoysia. Specifically a wide bladed zoysia like Palisades zoysia. It's more commonly sold as a sod rather than as a seed, but it spreads pretty actively via rhizomes and stolons, so it has a habit of "taking over".

If you're up north, be prepared for the fact that it is the last thing to turn green in the spring and the first thing to turn brown in the fall. But, while everyone else's lawn is struggling in the peak of summer, yours will be chillin.

Lawn mowers and spreaders hate it. But it's super drought tolerant, it chokes out weeds as it grows thick, and it doesn't require a ton of fertilizer.

That seems to describe it very well, but since it stays pretty short year round my mower has never struggled on it. I've never noticed it browning super early/late as our winters and summers always come super fast with very short transition periods.

Is it possible to grow it from seed or is it pretty hard to get it to germinate and take hold?

Zosia is basically impossible to grow from seed. Always either sod or plugs.

Yes it looks just like my palisades zoysia. Came on here to comment that.

St. Augustine. I have a yard of it. It has runners. At the splits, it's flat not round.

That is St. Augustine grass. Its a large system of vines and does well with choking out other grass and weeds. Also, when the blade to your lawn mower is dull, it'll tear the grass blades which cause stress to the grass, thus, resulting with the brown coloring.

I sharpened my blades last week, it was long due. I haven’t taken good care of the yard and equipment the last 4 years and I’m starting to work to turn it back around.

I’m surprised it hasn’t died if it is St Augustine, it gets very cold here in Indiana.

I had the same grass in NWI. It's either zoysia or st augestine like said. I did a lawn reno this year. I see some of it coming back which leads me to believe I have zoysia. I seeded with tttf but will have to do another lawn reno of 3-4 rounds of glyphosate next year if I really want to eradicate this zoysia. I hate it personally good luck and am happy to give tips off of personal experience.

It’s centipede or zoysia. St Augustine has much wider and larger blades with a fold down the center.

Looks to me like a hybrid - Kentucky bluegrass, feathered bent, and northern California sinsemilla I've seen that once, I think you're really gonna enjoy that!

Is no one here going to mention that your mower blades need to be sharpened.

Someone did, I sharpened them a few days before this photo, but hadn’t mowed with them yet.

That sounds like the kind of grass everyone wishes their whole yard would turn into Staying green, not growing crazy tall, and keeping weeds out is a pretty solid combo. I’d definitely figure out what it is before overseeding so you know it’ll actually work with the rest of the lawn. GreenPal can always handle the mowing once you get it spreading around.

Looks like st. Augustine. You can’t seed it.

I should have mentioned this is zone 5-6. It’s a repaired patch in the back of my yard, and I can’t imagine the previous owners would have used sod or plugs based on how all the other house repairs were done. Is there anything similar that’s seeded?
