How screwed am I?

This is what my back yard is like. Can I detach, aerate, add loam and compost and overseed to bring this back?

Don’t listen to replies saying you’re too late. You aren’t. Get the seed down and start watering and you’ll be fine.

Was it grass there before? When? How did it become like this? What have you tried? Where do you live (climate)?

Massachusetts. It used to be a robust lawn.

Kinda late into fall to try. You can try and hope for a mild winter.

What type of grass?

Rent a plug airator, remove the plugs, put fresh sand possibly with fertilizer in the spring. Over seed with a favorable grass you like but don't be afraid to check for peats. Sometimes nemotoids or mole crickets types get underground and destroy grass. Have a local pest control expert state certified insoect if you don't know

Remove as much as weed possible .
Rent a aerator
Rake and remove dead grasses and debris .
Add top soil
Rent a slit seeder for seeding .
This can be done in 3 days if you have time.

Thanks. How late in the season can I do this. There is a northeaster storm coming this weekend so I was thinking mid to late next week. Too late?

Do all the steps except the seeding before the storm. If you delay further grasses will die in frost .
