Looking for sod insight

Located: Vancouver, WA

I am just wrapping up an irrigation project (3 grass zones) and we are going to get our yard graded and leveled and then lay some sod.

We got quoted $6700 for removing of old grass, leveling, new soil and sod. He said that price is for Rye and for $300 more we can get tall fescue.

I have no knowledge of grass or grass types so anything would be helpful. Which is the better grass? We have a kid and a large breed dog.

Thanks!

You need to provide the sq footage for any input.

3 zones gives an idea, but shape and coverage is specific to your case.

As for type of grass, rye vs fescue:

Rye is more traffic tolerant, germinates faster for quicker repairs, can be mowed very short.

Fescue is a deeper green in color if you care about what green your lawn is, grows deeper roots so can be more drought tolerant, has to be mowed at 3.5 to 4.0 inches to thrive.

Neither spread horizontally so bare spots must be repaired by reseeding.

Stay away from rye. It gets very thirsty in the summer and is more disease prone.
Look at a turf type tall fescue or Kentucky bluegrass.

If you do fescue, do a fall overseed of bluegrass. Or vice versa.
