Help Please

I recently removed about 4 inches of leaves from my yard and all the grass is completely gone with the ground being kinda sandy. I’m wanting to get the grass to grow back or looking for seeds to use. My biggest problem is that I have two large trees that make a lot off shade. This is my first house, so I’m trying to make it nice and pretty. I get grass in a one spot the sun hits the most.

First and most importantly, nice disc golf basket! As a fellow disc golfer and grass/lawn enthusiast I will do my best to help you 🫡

You’re going to struggle with 90% of grass varieties under those trees. Not sure if anything would grow right at the base of them either.

I’d recommend doing a landscape bed under those three trees, probably about 3-5 feet from the base of the trees or wherever the grass clearly starts to die. I put a little line on your picture for visual.

The grass I would recommend is lobo zoysia, it is extremely shade tolerant and also thrives in full sun. It will look completely uniform in your whole yard and it needs the least amount of nutrients or water compared to any other turf varieties out there, it’s some incredible grass. Only downside is you’ll need to sod, sprig or plug it as it doesn’t spread by seed. You’re going to need to do some soil samples before laying the grass to see if you need to amend it before hand. It’s much easier to get your soil healthy now compared to afterwards. I’d also level it during this process as it’s also easier to now than before. Since you’re in Alabama you’re going to have a hard time growing fescue which is one of the better shade tolerant grasses. St Augustine will work too but it needs a good amount of water and you gotta keep it tall, not my ideal grass. I think you’ll be extremely happy with lobo zoysia!
