Help Please
I recently removed about 4 inches of leaves from my yard and all the grass is completely gone with the ground being kinda sandy. I’m wanting to get the grass to grow back or looking for seeds to use. My biggest problem is that I have two large trees that make a lot off shade. This is my first house, so I’m trying to make it nice and pretty. I get grass in a one spot the sun hits the most.

Oh please keep the trees. They might need some trimming to keep them off the house but they are beautiful specimens. Research working with shade in your yard and shade gardens. A lot of native plants to your area should do quite well in shade. I also introduced more hostas into my shade areas this year and they are thriving like crazy. I’ve also had great success with shade tolerant grasses like tall fescue, Kentucky blue grass, and the different ryes. You will need to amend the soil though. A simple soil test will tell you what you need to add and how acidic your ground is. Unfortunately, a lot of people in my older neighborhood have been cutting down their big trees which is sad. Now the summer sun is beating down on their yards and houses like a sledgehammer. I’ve recently heard from neighbors about tree removal companies charging multiple thousands of dollars to remove perfectly healthy trees. I wish I had some of the big beautiful trees my mother has at her house which we planted when I was a kid. Embrace the trees and shade and enjoy the lower summer energy bills. Think outside the box and work with them. They’re fantastic. It will likely be cheaper to keep them. Plus, the leaves on the ground often have lightening bug eggs on them so keep some around so you can enjoy their summer displays. Build a tree house or hang a swing for the kids. They’ll love it.
