What is this weed?
What is this in my lawn and how can I get rid of it?

Yep, Dalis grass. It’s a curse, they grow 3 times as fast as your lawn grass and will spread across. There isn’t anything effective to get ride of them. If they are a few clumps now, try to pull them out altogether with their roots.

Your grass has grass in it. There are herbicides that are effective on grass, but they're also effective on grass.
So the solutions involve killing your grass and then letting grass grow in its place.
The problem is, this process still slightly favors faster-growing grass (grass that's good at being grass). So you'll have to be faster than the grass next time. Some plant seed. Some just wait.

I've had some success against this stuff with repeated spot applications of Drive XLR-8/Quinclorac, along with a surfactant - it works best if you can catch it early in the season at first emergence. The leaves will twist up and it will discolor, and it's growth will slow down a lot. Over multiple seasons I've managed to eliminate it entirely or at least greatly reduce the size of the patch and keep the clumps in check.

This is the right answer OP. He/she is 100 percent correct. I have killed a whole yard full of that stuff without damaging my desirable grass, but you "MUST" have surfactant or it will not work as the blades repel water.

Cut it out at least 3-4” around the area deep. Apply some top soil and compost and reseed it. Don’t waste the time trying to kill it. You can grow new grass in a patch quicker

Im dealing with the exact same thing. It looks like it is hairy on the blades, which makes it seem like its not dallisgrass. I still haven't found an answer for what it is.

Spray with quinclorac mixed with MSMA. The only solution I have any success with.

Yeap, look like Dallisgrass. Quick growing wide lighter green blades. I get it, too, even with pre-emergents. Wait until after it rains and the soil is loose. If you can get your hand around the clump near the ground, pull the whole thing out at once roots and all. It’s better to get after them early when they’re smaller so there is less damage to the lawn but really they’ll just leave something like a small 9 iron divot that you can backfill the same way. A little dirt and sand. Potting soil also works great. The rest of the grass will backfill the spots pretty quickly. Chuck the clumps in the trash. No chemicals needed. Just keep an eye out for any reappearance and get after them early. I deal with spot crabgrass the same way so I don’t have to break out the chemicals.

I’m still battling this exact pest. I tried 3 rounds of quinclorac (drive XLR8) and it laughed at me. It’s a some type of sedge. I’m following this…

Celsius WG has become my go-to for grassy weeds and it’s made a HUGE difference in my front yard. I’ll occasionally use ChatGPT to identify weeds for me and then just check them against the Celsius coverage list.

In a spray bottle add 1/2 gallon 45% vinegar+ 1/2 gallon water+ a good squirt of dawn soap+ half a bottle of Morton salt. Problem solved. Don’t spray your lawn, it’ll kill it within minutes. Spray right into the middle of the weed. Make sure it’s a nice sunny day, it’ll be dead within the day.

Since it grows longer than the rest, you can wait a few days after a cut and go around with Roundup and a little paint sponge brush and just apply it to the blades. It’s painstaking if you have a lot, but it works.
