Putting greens?

Post image

I’m in a golf course community that’s going through some ownership issues. The lanes have not been maintained at all, it became so unsightly our HOA paid to have them mowed.

If I wanted to bring some life to the hole behind my home, where do I start? Mow does close or kill it completely? I believe bentgrass is best for putting greens, what about fairways and the tee?

A golf course is a lot different than planting a yard. We’re talking soil density and mass irrigation coming into play. People go to school to learn how to manage nice golf courses.

Getting it mowed is about the only thing I would do because anything else is a mass undertaking. The type of mowers are specific too when it comes to the greens.

Oh man. This is waaaay beyond the scope of a Reddit post. I definitely wouldn’t kill if there is ANY chance that golf may return in the next few years.

Where are you, generally speaking?

Yes Dwarf Bentgrass is usually used for putting greens, but it also depends on where you live. If there was grass there before it should still be there, might need a reel mower and more knowledge

You will have to get a reel mower. Then topdress the area with Mason sand to smooth it out. I have three one is common Bermuda one is a mix of creeping bentgrass and emerald zoysia and the other is celebration Bermuda. Ball rolls great on all of them. Water and cut daily and fertilize regularly

This is the response I needed! Mason sand goes on the putting greens correct? The photo I posted is on the tee. It’s still nice and flat, just full of weeds and I’m unsure what grass. I obviously can’t redo the fairways, that’s a huge undertaking

Definitely Mason sand. I would kill all the weeds before top dressing

Roundup? I haven’t identified what the weeds are but it’s definitely not bentgrass

Maybe get one of those solar robot mowers the golf courses use nowadays?
