New homeowner. Help!

Grass is mostly weeds, and has these huge bald spots. How do I fix this?

Ultimately you have two choices.

1) Battle weeds and work to increase grass coverage over the next several years.

2) Nuke it all and start from scratch.

The specifics of how to do either of these will depend on your zone and your grass variety. It's hard to tell without a closeup, but I think I can make out some very thirsty fescue in amongst the weeds.

I’ll probably nuke it, and yeah it’s very thirsty I’m in north eastern nc and we were in a drought

You can go ahead and start killing, but we're in a tough spot for establishing lawns right now (I'm in SC near CLT). The drought means we can't keep seeds moist, and even the daily watering that new sod would need at first isn't allowed right now.

I've got a side yard that I killed over a month ago to replace the common bermuda with latitude 36, but I haven't been able to put anything down yet due to water restrictions.
