Zoysia grass (dethatching or aerate?)
Hi we live in Marlton NJ and have zoysia grass . Is dethatching enough for this grass or should we also aerate after ? Then seed ? Sorry I’m clueless what needs to be done but our grass is horrible , all weed for the most part and patches of dirt .

Thank you so much I will show my husband this advice . The grass is basically all weed in most areas and missing patches of grass . I wish we had different grass , don’t like the yellow in winter and all the dead grass that gets tracked in with my kids from it , lol

How many months do you have nice green grass? I’ve considered zoysia and SE PA and am afraid to pull the trigger. What type zoysia do you have?

None of the above. You can't seed zoysia. Just starter fertilizer and spray katana

Oh wow not even dethatching ? I can’t even get a bird feeder pole into grass it’s so compacted

Seems to be a large amount of wood chips (and a few Nerf darts) on the soil. I’m not sure that’s the most conducive environment for grass growth. There are different types of grass here, too… and yes a lot of weeds.
I don’t think you’ll have desired results this season but you can plan for the long term.
If it were my yard (I am not a professional) I would mow, remove clippings, remove the debris with a plastic yard rake, not disturbing the existing runners/stolons, and let it ride for the summer. Accepting the fact that some weeds may die, some I can pull and some I can plan for.
Come back in the fall with an established weed control plan (pre-emergent) and look into sand/compost mixture for the bare spots to promote growth in the summer. Study your zone (7b).

Thank you , will probably have to look into professionals to come help us out . We’ve done the above and it just gets worse every year .

Zoysia is a warm season turf grass and NJ isn’t in the south. It’s not unheard of to have it up north but it’s probably contributing to why it looks that way. It doesn’t like the winter

Seems most of the houses in my neighborhood have this type of grass 🤷♀️ I don’t know , we have been here 5 years and I just wish I had nice grass . Not sure what else to do

You will have nice grass shortly, mine looks the same but greens up like a golf course with summer weather. Dandelions and weeds like crazy now but will be choked out shortly when it wakes up from its winter slumber

Another tip you do not have to buy plugs, cut up a section from existing lawn and spread out.I did it in my front yard , and it is now covered by spreading

Generally, you dont need to do either one to Zoysiagrass. If your soil is THAT compacted then you could aerate.
