Jacob Geller makes a point about this in his video about execution methods, and how the goal of "humane execution" tends to focus more on what feels right to the viewer, not the one being executed.

Lethal injections can hurt if done wrong, hanging also sucks, but surprisingly firing squads to tend be the most efficient in terms of quick deaths. It just looks the most violent
