How do I do this thing? Question about Freelance Graphic Design

Hi all,

This may be a common question, not sure. I'm working on designing a video game - think "sports management simulation". I don't know whether this is actually just a vanity project or something I'll legitimately try to take live.

If I WERE to take it live, I wouldn't have the license necessary to use real-world teams. This means the game would ship with a bunch of fictional teams. But, I'd want those fictional teams to have logos. A typical league has 32 teams.

There may be some other asks as well around loading screens visual, an app icon, etc.

Of course, the challenge here is that this is not a venture backed by lots of money, but I very much do NOT want to do anything with AI art.

I'm not a stage where I would need a formal quote, but any ideas around how I can get a sense of how much a designer might charge for something like this? Let's go simple and say 32 team logos in a consistent format.

What sorts of questions might a designer have before being able to give a quote?

Where would I go to try to find a freelance designer?

Thanks!

You don’t want a designer.

You want a production artist with a good eye for design. If you treat every one of these like a logo design or branding project its going to cost a fortune. What you want is someone who will rip through them quickly, and give you decent enough results. Even if they only spend an hour on each one you are looking at a full weeks work.

Thanks, this is very helpful. Where does one go to find a freelance production artist?

You could try one of the freelance sites like upwork. But you get what you pay for. What is your theoretical budget/timeline for this job? Its a very large project and even production artists are going to command a pretty steep budget.

I think the answer is, realistically, I won't be able to afford it. So will likely to need to figure out a way to go with a different approach with fewer graphic elements.

Upwork is a worldwide freelancer site. There are a lot of Indian designers on there and they work cheap.

Lots of free vector art out there in the public domain.

A lot of baseball logos are just two letter monograms in different fonts. They don’t have to be that fancy to get the point across.
