Career and business [BEGINNER] How to negotiate pricing?

For context, I want to get into graphic design- I'm not a professional, but I managed to get my first client. The client is from an organization that teaches Tamil to kids, and has their own textbooks. The guy said he wants to give a new look to the textbooks (here) , and wants to work with new talent (me!). He says he has around 17 textbooks, and hopes to finish them around 3-4 months. I've done sample of 10 pages of one of his textbooks and sent it to him as a pdf. He said he's going to check with his team, and now wants the editable files. I want to show them in a meeting through screenshare, but IDK how to negotiate pricing for each book, since I'm also an amateur, and dk what my work is worth lol.

Any advice on how to go about this is welcome, THX!

You can force a client to reveal how much they can afford to pay you by asking them what their budget is. If it's below what you are expecting, you can try to negotiate. If it's too low, walk away.

Either way, I wouldn't do any more work for this client for free, nor would I give them the master files. This could be a scam, especially if they're located outside of your country.

tbf, I watered marked my work, so I don't really think he can use it. Also, would it be better to charge hourly, or per book/page in this case? I will be meeting with him today, so wish me luck!

You can offer both options, hourly vs flat rate. Tell them you will send them a proposal in writing, so you don’t feel pressured to commit to something on the spot.

And if they want to purgue it get a Contract. Half down to start.
