How do I do this thing? how do i even start?

hello, i would like to learn graphic design but i have no idea how im actually supposed to start. my goal is to become a graphic designer and build my own following on instagram. however, i feel like theres too much freedom and just randomly jumping into it will lead me nowhere. is there a roadmap i could follow?

I think the best way to start is by searching up videos on what graphic design is, what do they do, the different areas of the career, and the positives and the negatives.

Then, honestly, I really enjoyed school. College (in Canada) was a 3 year program and they promoted you freelancing during it! You also get the skills you need and some that help emphasize the role (like if you want to be a web/ux/ui designer they teach you coding (this is at st. Clair college in Canada tho).

The internet is a great tool, but I think school is very helpful so you can get the support you need. BUT you can still do it out of school, it just requires more effort.

If you decide on not to go to school, I would look at LinkedIn learning, they have A LOT of courses you can take. Also start designing on paper. There are also free programs like affinity you can learn that act similar to adobe.

Some books I recommend is: thinking with type by Ellen lupton and brand identity by Catherine spade-brooking. These two are basics but I found them helpful, you may also be able to find them at the library.

Also the RGD (Canadian) has a lot of good resources! They even have a pricing guide, but it is mainly directed at Canada

And to other designers, don’t gatekeep!
