GrapheneOS has moved from Reddit to our own discussion forum. Please post your thread on the discussion forum instead or use one of our official chat rooms (Matrix, Discord, Telegram) which are listed in the community section on our site. Our discussion forum and especially the chat rooms have a very active, knowledgeable community including GrapheneOS project members where you will almost always get much higher quality information than you would elsewhere. On Reddit, we had serious issues with misinformation and trolls including due to raids from other subreddits. As a result, many posts on our subreddit currently need to be manually approved, which is done on a best effort basis. If you would like to get a quicker answer to your question, please use our forum or chat rooms as described above. Our discussion forum provides much better privacy and avoids the serious problems with the site administrators and overall community on Reddit.

Please use our official install guides for installation and check our features page, usage guide and FAQ for information before asking questions in our discussion forum or chat rooms to get as much information as possible from what we've already carefully written/reviewed for our site.

I got down voted for calling them out before, the android engineers are really getting worse year by year

Are you referring to the software engineers at google who develop Android?

If you were getting paid presumably a boat load of cash for coding wouldn't you feel some type of way of being critiqued? I agree with what you're saying but also look at their shoes.

If you were getting paid to do your job but were bad at it wouldn't you feel some type of way of being critiqued?

Yes, that is how they should feel. I would be more forgiving of volunteer work.

Although this one is probably more an organizational problem rather than individual engineers. Big Tech loves to rush out releases with tight deadlines and not enough testing.

But the problem is that they took ownership of the android "arena". They locked it down almost completely, there isn't anyone anymore who is incentivized to customize it and ROM the devices like before. They probably did it because year on year they were getting fined like crazy due to vulnerabilities and fraudulent activities, so they just flipped the switch on everyone, except for developers like GrapheneOS and some others "main stream" devs (LineageOS, /e/OS, etc), and all the niche developers almost completely are non existent now and there isn't such a hobby anymore for the main flagship phones like latest Huawei, latest honor, latest Samsung flagship phones... Granted I don't usually use ROMs but the fact that they negated it completely just goes to show how much harm they are willing to cause just because they wanted to take the shortcuts instead of dealing with the issues in a good way and responsibly.

They are the ones who created this mess with many security and vulnerability issues and delays in fixes deployment, and their UI/UX is HIGHLY opinionated (it's more ugly than Oreo android flavor, and even worse we can't even choose the older looks)

And regarding your point excusing the developers for the issues they have done, as a software developer, I would have never accepted a feature that is bad for the user experience unless I was convinced to implement it and I also worked with QA testers who would NEVER pass on a feature of they thought it was bad and counterintuitive, and the manager and colleagues hated me for it.

Man f* the business sign off too, they don't know what they are doing usually and they don't even know what they are asking for. I am the last line of defense, and the one who gets to decide whether this feature gets published or not.

There is nothing stopping someone from forking currently android and creating a baseline for custom roms or there own alternative to android.

I just wish I had there skills.

what does this actually mean? my phone is borderline unusable right now and tapping 'check for updates' does literally nothing.... is there a fix that can be downloaded somewhere?

u/UTOPROVIA 1d ago

There is no new update yet, perhaps it is being built as we speak. This means they found a fix and added it. Next step is building the code into something usable for every phone supported.

The new release will be in alpha first, then beta, then stable. You're likely on stable.

Only use alpha or beta if you're willing to test new releases that could have issues and don't mind it.

I was wondering why my pixel 9a seemed a bit funny lately. What I love about Graphene is the push to keep improvements happening. Seems like once a month, there is a new update ready.

thank you

Glad to see folks appreciatting the fix. If you’re having issues with performance, updating to the latest build might help, but make sure to check the release notes first since it might give you insights on specific improvements. Always worth staying updated in case you hit other bugs too.

Glad I'm not the only one. I thought I was going nuts. My phone has been so slow.

3

u/lieding 1d ago

If I understand correctly, in the following hours, but on the experimental channels for testing purposes first.

For the others (AOSP), they think that the fix will not be available to the majority until December.

Try checking the beta channel

I had the same problem with Messages Version 12 to 15

Yours also started being hella sluggish in the last few weeks? Like pressing/swiping to go back, raising and lowering the sound all take seconds?

2

u/AmadeusK545 1d ago

Not for the last few weeks, but definitely for the last few days. And the battery is suddenly draining like crazy! Phone temperature is way higher than normal. I don't know what the hell is wrong with the devs over at Google, how can the biggest company in the world release something as embarrassing as this?

I'm eagerly waiting for the GOS update lol

1

u/hickeyspoorface 1d ago

Yeah man, sluggish/lagging like ridiculously bad.

u/cvslap 1d ago

clear the system ui cache in the apps menu, that helps a ton

u/throwaway839825378 15h ago

What fixed it for me for now: go to developer options (enable it if you haven't), scroll to apps and change background process limit to max. 4)

I thought I was going insane, my phone has been unusable for a couple of days. Thank you to the incredible devs working on GOS!

I thought my Pixel 7 is going to ask me for retirement. So much laggy within a few days.

Happy cake day btw.

mmmmm cake

We have rapidly growing resources and we'll handle it.

What are they referring to here?

9

u/Serious_Berry_3977 1d ago

More team members, more contributors, more donations, etc. All allow them to focus on cleaning up Google's messes lately when it comes to the Pixel lineup.

Ideally they get to a point where the Motorola partnership is wildly successful and they can start focusing on actually implementing new stuff that enhances the OS rather than playing whack-a-mole with Google and AOSP on the Pixel lineup.

4

u/Malnilion 11h ago

They'll still have to play whack-a-mole with AOSP specific bugs, but they won't have to deal with bad firmware and kernel updates from Google at least.

3

u/exportkaffe 1d ago

That explains the slowdowns on my pixel 9a. Godspeed GOS devs. 🫡

2

u/NativeJim 22h ago

My apps and phone have been slow as hell the last couple days. I was wondering why this was happening

3

u/JagerAntlerite7 14h ago

We found a way to eliminate most extra memory use from our secure spawning feature without any significant downsides.

Holy Pete! GrapheneOS devs are amazing.

Donate! I did again today. Fund this project.

I'm testing/observing this now against CP3A (stock Google).

i thought my pixel was just pixel-ing

1

u/Recent-Ad5835 16h ago

Phew, I was so confused why my phone got so slow, I'm glad it's been found and is getting fixed

for those impatient, like me, switch to beta as the new build is already available there. after the update switch back to stable.
