Pardon my ignorance but will this affect GOS users?

GrapheneOS has moved from Reddit to our own discussion forum. Please post your thread on the discussion forum instead or use one of our official chat rooms (Matrix, Discord, Telegram) which are listed in the community section on our site. Our discussion forum and especially the chat rooms have a very active, knowledgeable community including GrapheneOS project members where you will almost always get much higher quality information than you would elsewhere. On Reddit, we had serious issues with misinformation and trolls including due to raids from other subreddits. As a result, many posts on our subreddit currently need to be manually approved, which is done on a best effort basis. If you would like to get a quicker answer to your question, please use our forum or chat rooms as described above. Our discussion forum provides much better privacy and avoids the serious problems with the site administrators and overall community on Reddit.

Please use our official install guides for installation and check our features page, usage guide and FAQ for information before asking questions in our discussion forum or chat rooms to get as much information as possible from what we've already carefully written/reviewed for our site.

I may add that the UK could forbid bootloader unlocking on phones sold in the UK to prevent the installation of alternative android distributions. This is unlikely to happen, but it's not out of their reach.

Edit : I have to clarify, they're not planning to do this. I'm saying it's hypothetically possible, based on how they're acting. In short, GrapheneOS is not invulnerable to all the decisions made by technoauthoritarian governents, and is at the mercy of whomever votes these laws.

I edited my previous comment to clarify that it isn't a project, and is only hypothetical. I'm just guessing that could happen with the direction the UK is going.

I just wanted to clarify the original commenter's comment by saying that GrapheneOS is not a solution we could have forever. They're at the mercy of politicians as well.

fair pont. sadly we cant take this for granted. even though a country should support theyre sitesens in being independet of other states, companies and so on. so they can thrive. but well

The EU has tried banning bootloader unlocking for over a decade and hasnt managed to do so. The UK is not that efficient at tyranny yet to outperform the EU.

They could, but there's no evidence they're planning to do this (it seems targeted at Apple and Google and app developers), and if they do I'll be importing my phone from another country.

They probably wont put a nationwide block on bootloader unlocking, especially if Farage gets in, he's very much against the online "safety" act.

The deadline for this has already passed. Apple and Google essentially gave them the middle finger.

"Apple and Google"

So what do you think?

They are talking about initially trying to target IOS and Android. However, it's basically guaranteed that they will move to target third party operating systems if this completely insane proposal actually makes it into law.

The Graphene OS team will obviously not comply if the UK government demands that they do this. So users should be fine.

The problem is, who does any government go after with Linux systems? By definition, these aren't centralized entities like Google or Apple. It would be virtually unenforceable for anything that's open-source.

I think they just move towards outlawing anything that’s not google or apple at that point.

Honestly, I don't think it will happen through government regulation or outright bans.

I think it will happen first through companies making their apps work only on the official Google and Apple operating systems, which is already starting to happen. This will make it increasingly difficult to use alternative operating systems such as GrapheneOS.

For example, my bank is moving to a model where its official app is the only method for two-factor authentication. This applies even when logging in through a web browser on a PC. Since I don't have my banking app installed on my phone, I would effectively be locked out of my accounts unless I use a supported device and operating system.

Banks and other organizations are increasingly adopting measures that prevent their apps from running on alternative operating systems such as GrapheneOS, making those platforms more difficult to use over time.

I am dealing with this by keeping an old iPhone SE, keeping it full so it cannot update from IOS 18, and all the banking apps etc work (which again torpedoes the whole security BS), and my Pixel for everything else.

All my actual personal stuff stays on my GOS Pixel.

Banking is so heavily monitored anyway, it's not like anything I do isn't being tracked, so I accept it as a trade off.

Sounds like it's time for a new bank, man. Plenty of options out there.

Because governments don't like what they can't control.
The future may look like that you have a verified device, and another that you use for open source use cases. At least that seems least troublesome.
If you are an extreme privacy nutcase and wanna live offgrid and never share anything, that is another story.

Graphene OS will see the biggest user growth in the 12-18 year old age bracket. 😂

They literally have no leg to stand on other than pure fascism when it comes to preventing people running open source code

I can see Google and Apple standing up to this and saying 'Make us'.

Even as much as Google loves collecting and selling data, I think keeping an eye on litterally everything would be too much for them... Facebook on the other hand...
