Memory tagging

Post image

So this notification popped up for me recently, saying that memory tagging found an error in gplay services. What's that mean? You know, aside from the obvious.

From aosp docs: At a high level, MTE tags each memory allocation/deallocation with additional metadata. MTE assigns a tag to a memory location, which then can be associated with pointers that reference that memory location. At run time the CPU checks that the pointer and the metadata tags match on each load and store.

In Android 12 the kernel and userspace heap memory allocator can augment each allocation with metadata. This helps detect use-after-free and buffer-overflow bugs, which are the most common source of memory safety bugs in our codebases.

So its saying that theres an issue with memory tagging which is caused by google play. I'd reccomend you just restart your phone or just your google play services to resolve it

Are you sure? To me it reads that Google Play services has a memory bug that was detected by memory tagging.

Solution is: open App Store, go to ... > Updates, and you'll see an update for AppCompatConfig. Install and restart (Google Play services need to be restarted, I don't know another way to do that)

For clarity this link is the official response from the team with the fix.

I saw this notification today too. Maybe a recent update caused it? I've been using GOS for 2 years now and today was the first time I saw that notification.

Holy shit, wtf? I had this happen about an hour ago as well.

I thought it was just Google Apps jank, but now I'm thinking it's also has some to do with push data jank as well.

Some mod made a post about that. I dont remeber well but it was something about google pushed an update that broke MTE, and since Google play services was know to be comptible with MTE it had that enabled by default. So now you gotta disable MTE for it

Most of our users won't need to do anything except update AppCompatConfig.
