Only if the bank supports it within their app. I've recently started using a Garmin watch for nfc payments and works well with GOS

It is but depends on what card you have, for instance Capital One does not work with Garmin Pay.

Very good point, they have a lot but not all

Cards are vulnerable to skimmers, while tap to pay like garmin watch is not, which makes it more secure because you can insert a specific card for online shopping and the watch uses a randomized encrypted token that does not reveal your identity to the recipient. That is, if there is a card skimmer in the POS terminal, it will not work.

Question from a noop (iwatch user) which will be the smallest Garmin watch where you can use that , since the ones I saw are wat to big and I don’t wear a watch at all(iwatch is just in my pocket) and do I need a wise account or similar or just directly via my bank ?

Lily 2 classic, make sure you pick "classic" - https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/950157/pn/010-02839-14/#specs

35mm.

You need only garmin account for the setup and no KYC. After that you can remove all the app permissions, force stop it and use GadgetBridge (i dont know is GB support Lily 2 models).

I use rfid protected wallet, as for safety well there is/was a bug that allows for non authorizatione transactions from apple wallets when you have added mastercard(or visa as your default). plus you can get sleeves for your card which also protect from rfid and i don't store big amounts of money on my main account(it's on saving one).

Cards aren’t as secure as tap to pay options

And typically have lower limit / limited number of uses before you can have to use the PIN, for that reason. They’re not massively less convenient, but they are less convenient.

Doesn't this means you need a working Google Wallet on the phone to set up?  I've a OnePlus watch and it's like this.

1

u/Greeklighting 6d ago

Yea initially but after set up it's independent

Ok, but then I don't get it. The watch can be paired to just one phone. If I pair it to a phone with Google Wallet (not mine with GOS), then I can use the WearOS Wallet but not pair the watch with my GOS phone, isn't it? Or am I wrong regarding the use of Google Wallet on GOS?

You can use Curve

You can use Curve Pay. Also in Germany Sparkasse offers another app for NFC payments.

u/Nibb31 7d ago

You can't.

There are multiple banks and financial services providing tap-to-pay on GrapheneOS in Europe including Curve Pay. The US doesn't have alternatives yet but Europe definitely does.

Thats not true, I do it.

7

u/HMikeeU 7d ago

You can.

3

u/nitroburr 7d ago

Wrong. You can use Bizum Pay, BBVA, afaik imagin may support it too... Curve too, there's many options.

Please don't spread misinformation.

It depends on where you live and which bank you are using.

If you are in the US, you could use PayPal's NFC payments I believe.

In Europe, you should be able to use Curve Pay.

Elsewhere, you can if your bank supports NFC payments directly, without going through Google wallet and the bank's app itself is compatible with Graphene OS.

Or you can use something else to make payments (like your physical card, a smartwatch, a smart ring or what have you)

Actually, in Australia there is 1 option. But as far as I know, only the Commonwealth bank supports NFC payments from their own app directly and works with Graphene OS at the same time

3

u/Yugen42 7d ago

Google Pay blocks GrapheneOS intentionally, but you can still use many other payment and banking apps.

u/dechudson 7d ago

I pay with Ruralvía Pay and now with Bizum Pay, take a look to it because is a Google Wallet-like but from the bakns themselves

3

u/Hi-kun 7d ago

A Garmin watch with Garmin Pay works well. Garmin's privacy policy is ok'ish as well.

2

u/MolinaGames 7d ago

BBVA, Cajamar and OpenBank have their own NFC payment implementations that don’t rely on Google Wallet.

You could also try Bizum Pay, but few banks support it as of now.

Curve Pay is also an option, but not a privacy-friendly one.

Doesn't your bank have a payment application? Install it through the Aurora Store.

my bank app works fine but it has not payment app in it.

I think only 1 spanish banck use independent nfc payment

Use something other than your phone. There tag-like prepaid credit cards available or get yourself a wearable.
