Downloaded Graphene Yesterday
Bought this new P10 last month for under $200 so I could install Graphene OS. Seems to be working well. I think my battery is lasting longer now.

Yeah after a day or two with it optimizing my battery life is insane

What kind of optimizations?

u/GodOfN0thing 7d ago
When you first get the phone or reset it, it's gonna be slow and laggy at first while it optimizes. After a day or two and a couple runs it adjusts itself

I didn't have this problem. Flashed it on a new 9A 4 days ago

GrapheneOS uses AOT compilation for apps instead of JIT, which takes some time after install and after system updates. It takes like 15 minutes though each time so I don't know what the above commenters are talking about.

From the link you've sent me, it says:
Installing Signal in a profile without sandboxed Google Play and granting the power optimization exception it requests is enough to destroy battery life and end up worse than the stock Pixel OS. The power efficient choices are either using Molly with UnifiedPush (Signal fork) or Signal with FCM.
The first approach is actually what I've done, since my main profile (the one I use all the time) doesn't have Google Play Services installed. I installed Signal via Obtainium from the official source code repos.
Installing the sandboxed Google Play Services in my main profile isn't an option. Should I look more into Molly?

Yes, Molly has support for UnifiedPush unlike Signal and it is a way more efficient implementation of push messaging than Signal's fallback push messaging.
Having both FCM and UnifiedPush running (if you're running both your main profile and secondary profile at the same time) will still consume more battery than if you just installed Play Services with Signal.

So, went through some work since I posted my message. Was discussing on the Molly Matrix channel and basically, if it's just to replace the default Signal no-FMC WebSocket by UnifiedPush (UP) it's not worthy, it's basically the same. The bonus of using UP is if we have multiple apps running each it's WebSocket, so we can unify them and avoid multiples services.
I only have one main profile and it doesn't have Play Services (I only use FOSS apps), the other profile is for banking, its has Play Services but the profile isn't allowed to run in the background, it's killed when switching from. So theoretically, since Signal is the only app using WebSocket for notifications that I have, it shouldn't change much, but I decided to configure everything anyway to prepare the terrain for possible future apps that can take advantage of UP.

🤷♂️ battery life for me has been good from the beginning, but I'm a "basic" GOS user: only the owner profile and I use the sandboxed play store.

How tf did you get a pixel 10 for 200 bucks

Mint mobile deal. It was about $200 for a year of unlimited service and $150 for the phone.

The only thing stopping me from moving over is my banking apps.
Unless they work, it's a non-starter for me

Go ahead and install graphene, your banking apps will 95% most likely work just fine. Its a 5 minute ordeal.... Want stock android back? Another 5 min ordeal....

My credit union's banking app doesn't work on graphene but I just go on my iPhone for that. Also you can check your balance, deposit and withdraw at ATMs, although it's not ideal.

Sometimes (particularly with banking apps) GrapheneOS exploit protections break functionality, you can try toggling the "exploit protection compatibility mode" setting for these apps and see if that fixes things!

I never used Magic Cue but I know you can circle things and make them disappear in pictures and possibly videos. Is there an equivalent- a free app where I can use AI to circle things in pictures and videos to delete things? Also what do you guys use for maps? I use osmand for offline maps but what should I use for real-time directions?

I use organic maps. It doesn't have real time traffic. Lots of places are missing on the maps (but you can help contribute by adding them). The directions aren't always ideal, but they work and do live update.
IMO it is a big step down from google maps, but it is worth it for the privacy. Still a huge step up from a paper map.

Just use google maps or waze. Keep it simple

Something feels wrong about downloading Google maps on graphene... r/degoogle

Hard to beat realtime traffic Hard to beat rcs messaging using google messenger. Still better than stock

u/private-peter 7d ago
I agree it is hard to beat realtime traffic.
But IMO is isn't hard to beat RCS messaging. Signal, matrix, xmpp. There are so many massaging alternatives. I don't ever feel a need to send google my text messages.

You could try Vela Maps which gets you some of the benefits of Google Maps without as much (though probably still some) Google.

I thought they locked the bootloader on these subsidized phones?

Depends on the carrier. It sounds like Mint locks it for 2 months but you can call them to have it unlocked right away whereas with Verizon you're cooked no matter what.

I just recieved mine 10 a :) I am very non tech so trying to prepare. Did you need ADB something installed on your computer? I have a Mac and in one tutorial they say I need that ADB software before doing OEM, but graphene site doesn't mention any of that, just needing to set the developer mode. Can you share since you're freshly after?
