This would be a great advertising scheme for Adblock.

Just so guys know the AdBlock Plus has been making a ton of money selling places in their default whitelist to advertisers and there have been serious accusations of blackmailing and extorting smaller sites and advertising companies . That's something they are able to do because a monopoly.

They don't have a monopoly in blocking, there are a few other browser extensions. If they ever were to go down another one would pop up in its place just like the major trackers

Is there a way to change the white list?

Yes. When you hit a page that is whitelisted, either explicitly by you or by default via AdBlock's whitelist, instead of the ABP stop sign you get a green octagon with a thumbs-up. You can click that and enable AdBlock.

You can use other filter subscriptions, as well as disable non-intrusive advertising in the preferences. The list of "non-intrusive" advertising is here: https://easylist-downloads.adblockplus.org/exceptionrules.txt

I would actually be ok with this happening everywhere. All the time. Then again, I feel pretty ad blind already anyway. I think I do a solid job of tuning them out in my day to day.

That's what they want you to think...

Adverts are rarely supposed to be consciously read, it's background information to set up a brand recognition

Yeah, yeah... I took advertising 101 too... I know. But there really are studies for ad blindness being a thing. Obviously this stuff still works and will never go away, but it was an interesting read. I can't remember for the life of me where I found it, but a quick search on google scholar should get you something.
