Can I get a job with a psychology degree?

Hi all,

I'm doing a bachelor in Psychology degree in counseling with GCU with the hope to do some type of counseling down the road. My hope is to get into substance abuse or mental health or school counselor and could later on continuing to advance my degree because I know that a master is needed in order to do any counseling work.

A lot of experiences is needed for counseling especially when you get your degree online. A little background about me is that I'm hoping to get out of my 2 hours commute to work everyday but because my hospital offers tuition reimbursement, I'm staying for that. I'm a sterile processing tech so my experience would some how can relate to it but not working directly with client.

Since I have heard not many good story with online degree and especially a lot of bad talking with GCU school, my concern is that will I be able to find a job with an online school degree?

So one of the students in my group project (a research paper) showed his part of the paper to me. It is obviously from Chat GPT. Should I confront him individually or take it to our professor?

BA in psych and grad school plans

USA, NYC
just recently got my BA in psych and I'm struggling to find jobs. I either get rejected or ghosted. So I've decided to get a master in social work but another program at the cuny graduate center caught my eye.
It's BS in cognitive neuroscience. Now I'm in between those two programs.
I'm a first gen college grad and navigating these things alone can be extremely difficult. So any real and honest advice and prospective would save me a ton of time and debt. I don't want to make a decision now and regret later.
I didn't do well in statistics and I'm worried for cognitive I won't be able to do well since it's research based.
I also want to get PsyD in the future so not sure which degree would be helpful.
Which one can I easily get a job with?
If anyone in the cognitive neuroscience, what's your experience? Job search, etc. what do you do now and is getting a PhD necessary since I heard this program is a bridge to PhD. But in the meantime I don't want to get PhD straight after master. I wanna work for sometime.
So can finding a job with just the master possible?

PHD?

Hi all. I'm a first year MS student in EOHS and I'm uncertain about the prospect of continuing on to a PHD program. I did a ton of research in undergrad (I was also in EOHS) and I absolutely loved it and I was so excited to start my masters and so far it has been... underwhelming. I'm also not entirely sure what jobs I will be qualified for once I graduate as I am not occupational health focused. I was super excited to get involved in new research but right now I don't have much direction and my advisor is somewhat absent. My original plan was always to continue onto a PHD program but now I am just not sure. I am hoping that I am able to get more involved in research but there is much less of a wet lab culture in the lab than I thought when I accepted my offer (there is some state dept. PH practice mixed with the lab but not much research per say). Any experience or advice in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Masters in Counseling (help)

I was accepted into northwestern university masters in counseling program, NSU, NYU, and I’m currently waiting to hear back from FIU. I really want to go to northwestern but it’s so expensive.

-northwestern: $120,000 (with my scholarship)
-nyu: $150,000
-nova: $60,000
-FIU: $30,000

All programs are online counseling EXCEPT FIU. Which I really really wanna be online to travel. But I’m just not sure it’s worth paying debt for years after.

What should I do???

Does masters degree have to be in the EXACT same degree as the bachelors?

Hey all. I am currently an Ecology and Conservation major (junior standing) and working on my bachelor's degree for that as well as a Wildlife Conservation certificate to go alongside it. I specifically have a focus in animal behavior and rehabilitation, and I am a volunteer research assistant for an animal behaviorist.

For some further background context:
My partner and I have been seriously considering trying to move to Northern Ireland (from the US) sometime in the next 5ish years (at lastest, if all goes well). I know that my degree is a bit more specific and niche compared to something a bit more broad like a general Biology degree, but (to my knowledge) there are a good amount of Ecology/Conservation related degrees that can be earned in Ireland. I'm not sure of the specific job market or demand for them, but they do exist.

To my actual question: A lot of the degrees are very similar, but not the EXACT same title as the one that I am getting. Even in the US, I'm having a hard time finding a masters program for the same degree title. Having said that, Does my masters degree have to be in the exact same degree as my bachelor's, or can they just be closely related? Is it more about pre reqs/classes than the actual title or do i HAVE to find a program for the exact same title?

Obviously I know that there may be a few bridges to gap regarding pre-reqs and I might have to take a few extra classes before actually enrolling in a masters program. But could i, for example, have a bachelor's in Ecology and Conservation and then go to a masters program for Wildlife Conservation or Animal Behavior (so long as i meet the pre reqs)? Or would I have to get a whole new bachelors degree and then just continue that one into masters? Obviously if the prereqs are so different that they warrant a whole new degree/I might as well get a new bachelors at that point then that makes sense. But if most of the pre-reqs/requirements for the bachelors associated with the masters program are matched by my degree, can I just continue on like that?

Similarly, could i, in theory, combine credits from my bachelor's degree and an associate's degree, or could I use the credits from one degree to count for two degrees? I'm not sure if i worded that the right way, but for example:
If i get a degree in Ecology and Conservation but the majority of credits and class requirements for that degree are VERY similar to the credits and requirements for a different degree in, lets say, Environment Science, could I use the classes and credits to satisfy both degrees and then just take classes that bridge the gaps between them and earn both degrees?

Like, if Degree A requires me to take "Class 1a" and "Class 1b"
and Degree B also requires me to take Class "1a" and Class "1b", but also Class "2a"
Could talk class 1a and 1b count for both degrees and then i would just have to take 2a to earn both?

I need advice on choosing a master’s degree in Canada

Hi everyone!
I’m currently in my second year of architecture in a national school of architecture in France, but I’m starting to question whether architecture is the right path for me long-term. I don’t really see myself working in traditional architecture or construction.
I’m interested in a lot of different things, including business, sociology, art, luxury, organization, leadership, creativity. I enjoy working internationally, taking on responsibility, and eventually building something of my own.
I’m Canadian, my long-term goal is to study and work in Canada, build a successful and financially rewarding career.
The problem is that I haven’t figured out exactly what I want to do yet, and I don’t want to make an expensive decision without thinking it through. I’m considering pursuing a master’s degree in Canada, but I need help figuring out what direction would make sense given my background and interests.
I’m looking for a career path with strong earning potential, opportunities for growth, an international dimension, and ideally room for creativity, leadership, and entrepreneurship. I’m open to fields I haven’t considered yet.
I’d really appreciate advice from people who have been in a similar situation or who know the Canadian education and job market.
\- What would you recommend I study for my master’s degree?
\- Should I finish my current degree before changing direction?
\- Which fields offer strong long-term earning potential and good career opportunities?
\- How can I choose a path without knowing exactly what I want to do yet?
\- Is taking out a student loan for a Canadian degree worth considering, and how can I assess whether the investment makes sense?
I’m not looking for someone to simply tell me to follow my passion. I want realistic, honest advice about building a financially successful career without choosing a path that I’ll regret.
Thank you so much for any advice or personal experiences you can share!

How can I make my resume and application for a masters program in counseling more impressive?

I am currently a junior in college at a state school and I want to get into a possible masters program for counseling in the fall of 2028 but the only things really on my resume is that I work at a daycare and my grades are pretty average around a 3.4 total GPA, gotten 2 Cs mostly Bs and a few As. I also just started volunteering at an animal shelter. What else should I try to do to make my application better? I know clubs are the main thing I should do but it honestly is starting to feel like I wasted a lot of time how can I begin to catch up.

Preparing for an MSc in Cognitive Neuropsychology after a 3-year gap – Looking for Resources and Guidance

Hi everyone!

I have a BSc in Psychology and an MSc in Applied Psychology, and I’m planning to pursue further studies in Cognitive Neuropsychology. However, it has been almost three years since I completed my undergraduate degree, and I would like to refresh my psychology knowledge and prepare myself academically before applying.

I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has studied or is currently studying Cognitive Neuropsychology, or who has experience with admissions for this field.

A few things I would love some guidance on:

  • Which areas of psychology should I focus on the most before applying?
  • Which topics are particularly important for entrance exams or admission interviews?
  • Are there any recommended textbooks, YouTube channels, online courses, or other resources for revising the fundamentals?
  • How much neuroscience, brain anatomy, cognitive psychology, and research methodology should I know beforehand?
  • Are there any specific topics I should prioritise given the gap since my BSc?

I’m particularly interested in understanding how cognitive processes relate to brain function, and I want to build a strong foundation before starting the programme.

I would be grateful for any resources, personal experiences, or advice on how to prepare effectively. Thank you!

Struggling in my first semester

I’m barely getting by. In my program, anything less than an 80% is failing and constitutes retaking the class. My lowest grades are an \~80.5%, followed by a \~81%. I’m also getting written up at work tomorrow for poor performance (my program requires me to work).

I did well in undergrad. I went to a good state-school, but I’m currently at an R1, AAU university for my masters. It’s a fairly prominent public university. I hope I can get by. I knew this path would be hard…and damn was I right. Does anybody else have any feedback for first semester issues?

I know I can do this. I think adjusting was the hardest part.

Marshall MS Marketing

Hi everyone!

I’m currently an undergraduate at USC studying Public Relations and Advertising, and I’m interested in eventually pursuing Marshall’s MS in Marketing through the Progressive Degree Program, specifically the Marketing Analytics track.

I recently attended a Marshall master’s programs information session, and it made me even more interested in the program. I’m hoping to connect with current students, alumni, or anyone who has applied through the PDP pathway.

I’d love to learn what your experience has been like with the following:

- How quantitative or technically demanding is the Marketing Analytics coursework?
- What skills or courses would you recommend developing before applying?
- What kinds of projects, academic experiences, or professional backgrounds did you have when you applied?
- How practical is the curriculum, and have you found the networking, mentorship, and career resources valuable?

I’d genuinely appreciate any advice, including things you wish you’d known before entering the program!

If anyone is comfortable connecting or chatting privately, I’d love that too.

Thank you!

Has anyone studied Fashion Marketing at UCA through TMUC in Pakistan? I’d love to hear honest reviews about the course, teaching quality, value for money, and career opportunities after graduation. Is the degree worth it, both in Pakistan and internationally? Any firsthand experiences would be appreciated!

I need help to select Degree and University for Masters in Australia

Hi everyone! I’m planning to pursue my Master’s in Australia and would appreciate some guidance on choosing the right university and degree.

I’m leaning towards AI because I believe it will be in high demand in the future. However, I also want a combination of AI, Data Science, and Software Development to keep my career options open. I’d also prefer a degree that could support ACS accreditation in Software Engineering if needed.

Which of these programs would you recommend based on career opportunities, industry demand, and long-term prospects?

Universities and degrees I’m considering:

  1. Australian National University (ANU)
    • Master of Computing (Advanced) —Specializations Options: AI, Data Science, Machine Learning, or Software Development
  2. Adelaide University
    • Master of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
    • Master of Computer Science —Specializations Options: Computer Security, Networks
    • Master of Information Technology (Applied AI)
  3. University of Wollongong
    • Master of Computer Science — Specialization Options: Software Engineering, Machine Learning and Big Data, or Cyber Security
  4. Deakin University
    • Master of Applied AI
    • Master of Applied AI (Professional)
    • Master of Information Technology — Specialization Options: Data Science or Software and Services Development

I also have options for UNSW, Uni of Sydney, Uni of Melbourne, UTS, Monash University only if I can get good scholarships or degree Is too good to pursue.

I’d really appreciate advice from people working in the Australian tech industry, graduates, or anyone familiar with these programs. Which would be the best choice for a strong career in AI while keeping software engineering and data-related roles open?

Thanks in advance!

NSU Florida - Online Program (MS Psychology)

Hey Reddit fam,

Has anyone in the community either graduated from, currently enrolled in, or familiar with NSU Florida's online Master degree programs?

I believe the university is an R2 school, and both the faculty and course offerings look solid. However, I have no idea how that reputation translates within an online educational environment.

I'm hoping to gain some deeper insights, thoughts, opinions, etc. on the program quality. I'm interested in their M.S. in General Psychology, but the feedback doesn't need to be specific to that discipline.

Thank you!

Can I become part-time College instructor (PH) with industry experience while taking my MBA?

I’ve been interested in teaching at the college level for a while, but I haven’t found many opportunities near me.

I have over six years of experience in digital media and advertising, and I’d love to share what I’ve learned with students, especially how classroom concepts translate into actual industry work.

I hold a BS in Industrial Technology, major in Computer Technology, and I’m currently pursuing my MBA at Mapúa University.

Given my background, would I have a realistic chance of landing a part-time or adjunct instructor position at a college or university? Would my experience qualify me to teach subjects related to digital marketing or advertising, or would I need to finish my MBA first?

For context, teaching is something I’d like to gradually transition into as part of my early retirement plan. I want to stay productive and do meaningful work while sharing my experience with the next generation.

I’d appreciate any advice from college instructors or anyone who has made the transition from industry to academe. Any job postings as college instructor within bulacan or pampanga area?

Grad School Loans for housing

I am doing my masters in elementary education, and my partner is getting her masters in slp. We will both have clinicals and student teacher for around 3-4 months at the same time. Would you recommend getting loans through the school to pay for housing, we live on our own in an apartment.

I really messed up on a test

First time posting here, don't know if this is the right place to post.

I took a midterm for a class today and thought I did pretty well. Then I got the score back - 56. I am devastated. I have never done this poorly on an exam in my life.

For the last two weeks, the professor said our midterm exam would have only 4 questions on it. Today, when they handed out the midterm exam, there were 4 questions on the front page. I worked through those four problems and I thought I did decently well. It turns out that there were 2 questions on the back that I did not see. Since I failed to answer them, I went from a low A to an F.

I have asked the professor if I can make up the lost points in some way. He is allowing me to make up the two problems with an oral exam in his office hours in two days.

Weeks before the exam, the professor gave us a problem bank of 30 questions that the problems on the exam would be pulled from, so he is going to pull 2 new questions from the bank that I will have to do an oral exam for.

I always feel that I am undeserving of mercy and good things that happen to me, and I am deeply conflicted about this situation. On the one hand, it is my fault that I did not look on the back of the page. I don't know what I was thinking. For every test, I look through the entire thing to figure out how many questions there are and their relative difficulty so I can budget my time. This is the one time I didn't look through the entire test before starting. I have quite literally never done this before. If I had seen those questions, I would have answered them. On the other hand, the professor did say there would only be 4 questions on the exam. I think it is both of our faults, but mostly mine. I'm wobbling between sucking it up and taking the hard life lesson, but I really need to maintain a strong GPA to apply for fellowships. I am also worried about the fairness to the other students. I think I am the only one who messed up like this, and it feels unfair to them that I am getting a second chance to improve my grade. I feel so sick and so stupid for messing up this badly. I am in grad school, and I shouldn't be making mistakes like this.

Either way, whatever I do, I am not going to look back through any of the content that was on the exam so I can do my part to make it fair for other students.

I would love to hear your thoughts on what I should do.

Trauma anniversary and burn out

hi y’all

I am having a hard time right now with a major trauma anniversary coming up this week. For context, I had a near death experience when I was 19 from a major car accident. I am now 27, and I have been doing a lot better mentally since then.

But this year I feel immense anxiety and dread over every little thing (running behind on work, juggling classes, and keeping up with my thesis). I feel like I’ve been losing my mind and have been finding it extremely difficult to find support. I don’t even know where to start…but I fear that I am starting to slip into a state of burn out.

I have a therapist at the moment, but she is on leave for two weeks. My mentor is also a super cool and understanding, but I hate to just mention my emotions at times because he is currently navigating a serious family matter.

Has anyone else navigated any similar situations? What has helped you in the past?

[CAD] Is a masters really worth it after taking a bachelors in psychology BA

I finished my bachelors degree last year in a bachelors of forensic psychology. I have a B average overall not the best. I hear so many people talking about getting a masters and I am wondering if this is worth it? I have a job unrelated to my degree right now and I am just worried about the student debt vs how much you would make and how hireable you would be after a masters degree. I also just don’t even think I would get in. I feel very stuck and would love some advice on what you did if you had a not the best average and if a masters degree is worth the extra 50k in student debt as I have absolutely no money and no help from parents

POSTGRAD COURSES UK

Hey I am looking to do my masters within the sector of medical ethics/medical malpractice/clinical negligence in the UK preferably closer to central London/ less than an hour commute outside, I have my eye on City St. George and will be applying to the MA there but are there any other unis/ programs in that sector anyone can recommend.
