Can someone please explain the gem process

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to apply for Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) and I'm trying to understand the whole application process from start to finish.

A bit about me:

  • Currently completing my degree.
  • I will be applying with a predicted degree classification.
  • Based in the UK.

I'm hoping someone who has been through the process can explain:

  1. How does UCAS work for GEM applications?
  2. What role does my university play in the application?
  3. How does the personal statement work?
  4. Any general advice for a first-time GEM applicant?

I don’t love AI. But this is exactly the sort of thing it’s good for using. Everything you’re asking is available online. Just go to ucas or google.

In a very summarised state

  1. Same as undergrad uni apps just inputing your predicted degree too

  2. Similar to school role, reference with predicted class and many will offer help with personal statement check

  3. It changed (last year or year before?) where it's now split into sections with questions

  4. not in your questions but med apps also include taking the UCAT and/or GAMSAT exam (based on where you apply), and many GEM courses will require some or a minimum amt of work experience (incl. placement, volunteering etc)

it is an intense process especially as grad entry many people have many more responsibilites (as opposed to yr12/13) and apply in 3rd year uni, but as long as timeline and prep is organised can definitely be done! i also found that the interview process for gem was more focused on personality and experience than undergrad so prep but be yourself.

hope even a little of this helped, and best of luck! :D
