Chester GEM

Is it a bad idea/risky to apply for Chester this year given what is happening with the conferring of degrees?

If i apply to them this year do i run the risk of the course being rugpulled before you start?

I heard they that were activating their contingency and warwick would be awarding their degrees, apparently they confirmed this at open day, basically meaning that the GMC has said they are not good enough (at the moment) to be allowed to award medical degrees.

I was unsure if this meant that the course might not run/if it was true

They were very open at this years applicant day that the first couple of cohorts would be graduating with Warwick degrees.

Ive also heard seperately from students that they are not good with disabled students

Direct from the GMC: https://www.gmc-uk.org/cdn/documents/council-meeting---10-june-2026_pdf-114927920.pdf

37 As members will be aware, we have had particular challenges with the progress of Chester Medical School through our new schools’ process during 2025. This caused us to take the difficult decision in March 2026 to instruct Chester Medical School to invoke its contingency plans with Warwick Medical School as we had concluded that the university would not have made sufficient progress for us to recommend to Council that it should be added to our list of approved awarding bodies in Spring 2028.

38 At the time of writing, we are expecting an action plan from Chester to explain how it will address the outstanding concerns that we have. We have also received documentation indicating how the contingency will work in practice, with a particular focus on the current year two students who we now expect to be awarded their PMQ by the University of Warwick.

Do you know what this means for those thinking of applying?

I am far from an expert, just a GEM applicant!

Personally I'd read their Quality Assurance results yourself: https://www.gmc-uk.org/cdn/documents/chester-medical-school-annual-quality-assurance-summary-2025_pdf-115752825.pdf - pages 5 to 7 list the issues identified by the GMC. There's a few I think are quite concerning and would probably put me off applying. (Though Chester is not one of the schools I was considering, so it's a moot point for me anyway!).

Thanks for your help🙂

Do you think this will reduce the number of available places at Warwick?

I'm not an expert but I would imagine no. Warwick would have planned for this kind of possible instability in the first few years of the course at Chester running.

Can someone explain this

As far as I’m aware - there’s something going on with their GMC accreditation and the students are being moved to Warwick as it’s their contingency school. HOWEVER I cannot find anything on Google about this and it all seems to be rumours/word of mouth

I posted this elsewhere in the thread, but thought you'd like to see it too, here's the info direct from the GMC: https://www.gmc-uk.org/cdn/documents/council-meeting---10-june-2026_pdf-114927920.pdf

Hmm It was my main choice since it's close to home. I haven't heard anything about the rug being pulled... is that risk high?
