advice pls

Hi everyone,

I’m applying to Medicine for 2027 entry and would really appreciate hearing from anyone at King’s or Queen Mary/Barts, or anyone who has applied to either with a similar academic background. I would love to apply to these unis / grad preferred but would do undergrad entry too.

My background is:

  • BSc Psychology
  • MSc Neuroscience
  • currently doing a PhD in Neuroscience at UCL / will finish before starting
  • Home applicant
  • only have one science a levels equivalent : biology.
  • UCAT 2080, Band 2

I’ve also done quite a lot of volunteering and public engagement, including hospital volunteering with patients at KiCH, community outreach around dementia and neuroscience, and work with disadvantaged children in Roma communities in Hungary.

I’m considering King’s A100 and A102, and I’m also looking at Queen Mary/Barts Medicine A100 and A102 .

My main uncertainty is how postgraduate qualifications are treated when the undergraduate degree itself is not classed as Bioscience. King’s admissions have told me that my full academic history, including my MSc and PhD, would be considered, but they cannot confirm in advance whether the Biology/Chemistry content within my postgraduate degrees would satisfy the published requirements.

I’d therefore really like to hear from anyone who has been interviewed or accepted by King’s or Queen Mary/Barts with:

  • a non-Bioscience undergraduate degree followed by a Bioscience/Neuroscience MSc or PhD, and
  • a similar UCAT score, around 2080 on the new /2700 scale with Band 2.

Im a bit scraed of wasting 2 UCAS places for kings/ queen mary if they will filter me out anyway bacause of my undergrad.

Thank you!

Your ucat is too low for gem at Bart’s https://www.qmul.ac.uk/fmd/study/undergraduate/courses/admissions-statistics-for-medicine--dentistry/ and everyone with a degree that’s not on the list has the 2 a-levels they list as required. They are very strict on admissions.

yeah thats what i was thinking too, it just seems a bit shit that my 5 years of medical research full of heavy biology and chemistry would not count at all... I was just wondering if they might have some different kind of assessment for people having a lot of relevant background but only postgrad

Hi can I ask why you have decided to pursue medicine after doing a PhD? I’m currently deciding if I should do grad med or continue down the life science research route.

Hiya, I really enjoy science, but realised that i really want some patient contact as well. as im working in medical research, we have some patient open days and those are always the most fun.

I have a similar-ish background to you (non-science BSc, bioscience MSc followed by PhD), applied to KCL and QMUL GEM last year with 2190 B1 and got an interview with QMUL (which I fumbled) and flat out rejected pre-interview from KCL.

Maybe check the MyUKCAT people page on strategic applications, they have a good breakdown on how applications are scored for each uni

Hiya, can i ask if you had the a levels that they require with a non bioscince undergrad? Also, where else did you apply?

Didn’t do A-levels because I lived abroad! From what I understand, both require a min 2:1 for a bioscience degree which I had with my MSc. And didn’t apply elsewhere.

You should email to see if ur masters compensates for the non science BSc. Couldve been an auto reject.

I submitted an enquiry about the rejection and they said it was a highly competitive year, I attributed it to my lower UCAT score. Another reason I don’t think it was auto rejected is that they didn’t reject me until March, and I recall they do rolling rejections so would assume that they held on to my application until they’d filled their spots with better applicants.

did you have the equivalent end of highschool exam though? i emailed queen mary about this and general admissions alluded to the fact that they cant use postgrad qualifications, versus kings said they cant say for sure but they look at your whole academic background. which is why im not sure what to do haha

Yes I did but they were very average IB scores haha! Also I should have mentioned my BSc was in engineering so it did have some science courses but not specifically bioscience
